View Full Version : Rust on my G23 night sights
My year and a half old Trijicons are rusting and the dovetail on the rear of the slide is full of rust.
It is not the gun itself rusting, but it sure caught my attention. The gun is a duty gun so it is not neglected but, carried every day on and off-duty wind rain or shine.
I wonder if Trijicon would warranty the sights against rust?

Who put the sights on?
Was a pusher used or the less preferred hammer method?
Before I knew better I had used the hammer method on a set of Ameriglos and low and behold some rust started to form in the dovetail area. The rust was indeed due to the beating my NS took from the tool that came into contact with them, it seems that a tiny amount of the finish had been worn off and that most certainly led to the rust.

I'm sure it looks worse than it is. Take an old toothbrush and some cleaner to it. You can never truly install sights with some loss of paint. It gets pushed off the dovetail part of the sight as it goes in. Hammered or pressed, it doesn't matter.
The sights were installed with a sight tool by the LE armorer (it is my personal gun but I let the armorer install them)
I guess I didnt think that it was a problem with the finish rubbing off during installation.

I have never had that problem with my trijicons or meprolights. I would clean them up, then liberally put some lube CLP Breakfree let them sit over night, then wipe off the excess. See it that helps.
I guess this is just one more reason not to screw with Glocks by adding aftermarket parts.
FYI I took the above advice and applied a little CLP. The rust wiped off and has not returned as of today.
I might contact Trijicon, but it would probably be a waste of time.

This will probably do it. Cleaning off the rust with a CLP boosted toothbrush should take care of it, especially if you leave a slight amount of CLP residue afterward. I had this happen once with a Glock I typically carried on PT runs.
