My brother and I built this up for a friend of ours. Also, built up most of another one as well, but we didn't have a delta ring kit...

Hadn't built one up from scratch for a few months though.

Hopefully he gave you plenty of ammo to test fire it.

Is that a DD FF you got on there?

You are a nice friend.

Yes, it is a DD FF. I think they are nice but I think the LaRue FF's are just slightly better. Both will work great though.

That particular gun is mostly DPMS components. The flash hider is one of the 4 pronged phantoms. It does not have the compensating effect.

But is was made to be used as a wire cutter.

Looks good!

How many ARs would you say you've built? I'd like to put my own together someday.

I would guess somewhere in the mid-upper 30's but to be honest I can't give you an exact number. We did a bunch right after the AWB ended and we continued to do several throughout all last year... This year has been slow.

When you build yours from scratch, do you get the uppers pre-assembled or is the upper and barrel separate? If so, do you check headspacing? I bought a stripped lower the other day and am getting ready to start my 1st build and I'm trying to think ahead. Thanks GoreLicks.

Course he might do each component separately but I doubt it.

Gorelicks, when you gonna go varmintin' again? :clown: I'm anxious to start as soon as I get things together. Could be as much as a few months away!

I usually assemble the uppers and the barrels. Only a couple times have I done a build where I didn't barrel the upper.

No, I don't check headspacing. At least not anymore. I used to, and it just seems pointless anymore. Never not had the spacing correct.

Oh, jeez, well, I am gonna be struggling to get out in the next 2-3 months (to varmint hunt anyways). I tried to get out a couple weeks ago, but we just didn't have time.

Hmmm, I thought it would be cheaper to use a upper that came with a barrel, unless you need specific barrels for specific builds. Is it any cheaper than getting a barrel(l)ed upper?

Well, in my experience it's not any cheaper to get a barreled upper. In fact, in many cases I'd guess just the opposite if you really want a good deal. There are a few reasons why barreled uppers aren't the way to go though IMO, aside from the money issue.

First of all, you have to realize that we refinish the vast majority of the AR's we build up, in which case you have to have the barrel seperated from upper, as well as have the lower completely stripped, etc... This process gives these guns a custom color and more durable finish.

Plus, if you want a superlight barrel or anything else that isn't commonly on a barreled upper you have to get them seperately. Also, if you want a free floated barrel you have to remove the barrel anyways.

The stuff we do with these guns is custom. Made to order so to speak.

It really depends on the components used and what you want. Sometimes, the only way to get what you want is to build it yourself.

For example, there's no way in heck I can come close to building an upper for the price of this one (http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=184), unless I used a really crappy barrel.. however, it might not exactly be what you want.

However, building an upper gets fun when you score a good barrel for cheap  Cheap barrels pop up all the time, if its SS or chrome lined, 1000 rounds is nothing if it hasn't been damaged by a rod.

The real money you save is in not buying the rifle complete and avoiding the tax on complete weapons. Building is all the fun
