View Full Version : What 7.62X54R ammo to get??
I'm stopping at Aim Surplus and I don't know whether to get the Czech 147 grn or the Hungarian 174 grn. Anyone here have preferences???
I avoid czech like the plague, none of my 3 play well with it at all. The first 5-10 shots are fine but after that they just stick like hell and are a royal pain to extract.

Never tried the Hungarian.
I buy the Czech mainly for the components.
I've had good luck with the Polish light ball.

the polish and albanian are good stuff. im on my 2nd can of this russian fireball stuff.
the lacquer on the czech stuff tends to make my mosins bind up but my tokarev likes it.
the 174gr hungarian tends to beat you up a bit more when you shoot it.

Here's my best to worse recommendations for Mosin and SVT:
- Wolf 148 ball or Wolf 200 ball
- Prvi Partizan 150 ball or Wolf Gold ( if you can afford either )
- Russian light ball ( surplus made in the 70's and 80's )
- Polish light ball
- Hungarian heavy ball ( recent manufacture, such as the "silvery cases with the yellow-with-silver-stripe )
Here's what I DO NOT RECOMMEND SHOOTING through anything you have more than $100 in as it is crap
- anything Czech ( for obvious sticky-chamber issues, esp in SVT )
- Brown/Silver Bear ( lacquer buildup issues )
- Albanian ammo ( while it functions extremely well, it generates a lot of filth/corrosion etc etc etc )
- Greek "Olympic" ammo
- any ammo over 30 years old
IOW, I wouldn't buy either, but as always, whatever floats your boat. Better spend a few more bucks and keep shooting it years from now than ruin it. Same argument as with "shooting bare lead through a Glock".

I like "Igman" brand 7.62 X 54R ammo, from Bosnia.
Generally speaking in Mosins they dont like laquered ammo much. I've had excellent luck with Hungarian steel cased, Soviet 1940's and 1980's copper washed steel case and Albanian + Yugoslav brass cased ammo.
1960's Czech, 147grn, Light Ball
Works great for me.And is the cheapest I have seen.
I got another box since it seems to all be going up in price now that they have us hooked.
