View Full Version : Could use a little advice on Trijicon install...

My Trijicons should be in today and as much as I have worked on various guns, I have never swapped sights. I believe the Trijicon front has a screw-on base and I know the back just slips in as the old slips out.

I don't have a rear sight pusher but I think I can make due with home tools without damage. So, question for those more experienced here...

#1...On the model 19 and 27 3rd Gen does the front site just tap out from the bottom, or how does it remove without hacking it up ?

#2...On the rear install, would it help to lube first, prior to install ?

Are there any other tips you can offer for my new install project here ? I'll have them in hand this evening and be ready to go.

Thanks up front !

I think you will need a rear sight tool to install. The dovetail is just too tight.
Front sight has a little polymer pin in the middle of it, which I usually pop out with a dental pick type instrument, then squeeze the sight together, while pushing out. Use small needle nose pliers.

Take AllG's advice, even a stiff needle will do if lever from the front thru the bbl. "hole"...
Or, just twist off the top with pliers if not saving.

Yours is a good idea light oil in the dovetail and on the sight helps a great deal. Try the sight for fit first to see how far it will go in without any force as a starting point. Mark with pencil line.
Having a pusher is ideal but can be done without if careful. Best if have a bench vise can pad jaws with even cardboard to hold slide rigidly. Trijicon's have a quite shallow angle on the end or "side" of their sights. If can get a hardwood dowel, try tapping sight in with no more than a 4 oz. brass hammer or if none choke up on a havier "household" hammer. Their sights have a "dslot" in the bottom that allows a certain amount of compression to fit in Glocks goofy "hourglass" shaped doetail so it will deform to fit and get more difficult to tap in as get clooser to the center of the sight.
If you tap your OK and so are the trit. vials, hitting hard is no good, period. May have to use a brass punch or perhaps better a piece of brass rod stock from a Dusty Depot type store that you can file to fit width of sight and dovetail. will have to play with angle once sight is in dovetail to find best compromise that moves the sight and doesn't just transfer the tap/blow to the slide thru the sight, etc.

Good Luck!

Here is the deal:

You NEED a sight pusher for the rear. Don't try to install without it. You will probably be sorry.

Front sight: Stock sight; get pliars and pull out.
New front sight: installs with screw and provided sight tool. Use some locktite on the threads.

You are done!

Great guys ! Thanks for the help. Well, I MADE a sight pusher. First, I ran a super-fine stone over the bearing edges of the sight. Didn't remove any metal, per say. This slicked it up. Then, I smeared Tetra Gun Lube all over the sight channel to make it even slicker.

The sight would only go a third by hand. You won't understand this but I took several c-clamps, a piece of hard plastic (thin) sheet for a barrier and rigged this setup. Looks like hell but sure did work.

Pushed the sight all the way to the edge of the slide and I ran outta push. Then, I then lightly tapped it with a short, small diameter wooden dowel and light plastic hammer until she trued up. Not a scratch on the slide or rear sight and it looks GREAT. Glass vials are still intact and my G27 CCw is even better now.

Thanks guys, for the tips !

Oh, front site came out just like advertised !

Can you post pictures of your sight pushing rig?

Off and on, I have been sketching various unsuccessful schemes for doing what you've apparently been able to do. Looking forward to seeing your pix.

OK, but only if you promise not to laugh.:laughabove:

The following pic is a triangular piece of 2x4 screwed into a std. 2x4. I then have a 1/2" square piece of stock which is clamped to the top of the slide to keep the slide planted and keep it from tipping over as pressure is applied to the sight.

The triangular piece is a random piece of scrap I grabbed, for use in keeping the slide from being pushed off to the side when I apply pressure to the sight. Like I said, it is screwed down to the 2x4.

Vertical clamp holds the slide down and up against the triangular piece of triangular stock.

Horizontal clamp presses the sight into the dove tail after it it started by hand (use plenty of gun grease in the dove tail and on sight). Plastic piece is to keep the clamp from contacting the sight and slide and prevents damage to sight/slide.

You can only push it so far with this rig (about 80%), then you have to use a small diameter wooden dowel rod and tap it the rest of the way to true it up (I used a plastic hammer with the dowel). After I cobbled this thing together, it worked like a champ.

I'm sure with some fine tuning, someone could actually make it look good and work even better. Good luck.

Necessity is the mother of invention.:freak:

If that pic is too big I can size it down a little.

I called a few gun shops and asked them, "if I buy the Trijicon sights from you, will you install them for free?"

One shop said, "no, but we'll do it for $15.00 bucks." I then asked them, "okay, how about if I buy a new gun from you AND buy Trijicon sights. Will you THEN install them for free?"

The store said, "no." So I said, "That's too bad, because I was going to buy a Match M1A from you, looking to spend mucho money, but now I won't. Thanks!"

I called the second store with the same first question above. The guy said, "sure we'll do it for free. It will cost you about 3 minutes of your time, that's all."

I said, "sold. I'll be down in 30 minutes."

And guess what, he didn't have any M1-A's, but he did have a new Colt 1991A1 .38super I put a deposit down on!

You said it! Some folks just don't get it. Word of mouth advertising cannot be underestimated!! The store that hooked you up...probably has a customer for life now.
