View Full Version : .223 ballistics
Anyone have any experience of shooting .223 rounds out of a barrel as short as 9"?
I am trying to find out if such a short barrel will stabilise this round sufficiently for accurate shooting at distances out to 300m.

The only person on this board who I know of that I think might be able to help you is M2Carbine. Try PM'ing him, he doesn't frequent the BRC, or at least, he doesn't post all too often here.
I've shot 7.5" AR's and they stabilized the round at 75 yards but we never shot them past that distance.
300yd with such a short barrel won't be adequate for terminal ballistics. I am not sure what will stabalize out that far, but in any case it won't be very potent.

All 10.5-14.5 SBRs I've fired held at least Minute-Of-Jihad accuracy at that distance. Some much better when optimal loads were found. The BHA 68 OTM, 75 and 77s, and Mk262 all shot very well.

Exactly!!! That is why I won't buy one, too.
Come on guys, those SBR's are not designed for target shooting or for general purpose but take them indoors or for close quarter work and their reason for being is apparent.

I agree, but still, if it mattered, I'd go no shorter than 14.5". I just can't justify having a barrel length that short and not use SMG ammo to do the deed.

If I were kicking doors or in the house clearing business I would very much prefer a SBR in 5.56/.223 over one chambered SMG ammo like 9mm. Forget the energy difference, I'm talking about over-penetration and the associated liability. Regarding barrel length, 14.5" barrels can look very long when you are navigating corners, doors and the like. SBR's have their place.

I like conscientious human beings like you, Sierra. What kills me is that SBR's are restricted to conscientious humans like you and are the norm for not-so-conscientious POS's like the Bureau of Jack Booted Thugs, who really don't give a damn about liability, since innocents slain by those particulars would never be prosecuted in a court of law.

I have a 7.5" and the barrel is pleanty accurate. It supposedly groups around 2 MOA at 100 yards but that is alot further than I ever plan on shooting this.
The barrel is a 1/7 and I use TAP 75 grain.
If I were to shoot a SBR at 300 meters I would buy a Noveske 12.5 as it has had excellent reviews for being extremely accurate.
If you are trying to maximize the velocity of your SBR you may also want to supressor as they will aid in extra FPS.
It may be worth an email to Wes at MSTN as he is very familiar with SBR's and is extremely knowledgable.
One last suggestion. If you do go with a SBR you will want a krink style brake like the Noveske KX3 as they aid in redirecting the blast away from you.
Here is a photo of my 7.5" SBR.
