What's the best scope for .308 heavy barrel?

What is the best scope for under $1000.00 for a 26 inch heavy barreled .308 rifle. Mostly used for long range target shooting. I've never owned a scope of quaility, and don't have the money for trial and error. I know Leupolds are suppose to be well made, any other suggestions?

I use a Leupold Tactical 4.5X-14X w/ AO and mil dots on my heavy barrel Remington 700 LTR and used the same on my 700 Sendero. I have Leupolds on all of my scoped firearms and I wouldn't use anything else. Got it at the PX at Quantico for just over $500. Not the cheapest, but certainly one of the best.

In that price range you might also look at a Nikon Tactical. I know several guys that have switched over to Nikons the last few years - http://theopticzone.com/detail.aspx?ID=4017

I can only afford Bushnell Elite 4200's, but I switched to those after two Leupolds (VX-I and a VX-II).

Thanks "Devil Dog" Phil, and Brian. That was a great price for that Leupold. Does the 40mm draw in enough light for dawn, and dusk shots? I also like the new Nikon tactical scopes, but I don't know anyone who has one. When I was in the Marines I believe the snipers used a fixed 10x by 56mm Untrel scope, or something to that effect. Does anyone know about those?

I believe the 40mm objective of the Leupold brings in plenty of light.

The Unertl 10XTactical scope you referred to that is used by the USMC on the M40A1 and the FBI goes for $2500. I think you stated that your budget is $1000.

I'd get a leupold mark 4 4.5-14 scope for that thing. You'd be cheating yourself if you didn't get at least a decent leupold.

You can also go the route of the super snipers. They are 400$ or 300$ and they are supposidly coming straight from the manufacturer which cuts costs. THey are great scopes for the price. Comparable to the leupold in alot of ways, but in some it's not. I had it before my leupold mk4 8.5-25 and sometimes wish i still had it in a 10x.

Go to CDNN and look at the Dr. Optick offerings. Otherwise, get a MkIV M3.

Definitely take a look at the Zeiss Conquest series (available at Cabela's and Bass Pro Shops among others). I have them on 4 of my tactical/varmint rifles and they are fantastic. Good enough that I got rid of all of most of my Leupolds and replaced them with Zeiss's. The clarity of the optics and light absorbtion are second to none. Leupold optics are definitely top-shelf, but Zeiss offers better optics with an identical warranty (Lifetime) for the same price (At least with the Conquest series. Other Zeiss scopes can go WAY over your self-imposed $1,000 limit. The Conquest series just leaves out some of the bells and whistles that seem to appeal to European shooters).

You should at least take a look at them before making your purchase!!!

IOR Valdada 2.5 x 10 x 42mm tactical FFP (first focal plane) and illuminated MP8 reticle. German glass and built like a tank. You can get one for $739 shipped from Scott at LibertyOptics on snipershide.com.

I like the Zeiss Conquest idea, but those are really hunting scopes when you get right down to it. I like the IOR better. My two cents.
