View Full Version : why does beretta not make a 92fs in 45acp ?
they made the 96G, which seems to work fairly well, why not chamber one in 45?

The short answer is the gun is too small.

...and the falling locking block design is not condusive to the 45auto platform.

I don't know how much truth there is to what I'm going to say, but before Beretta made the Cougar 8045, it was rumored that they considered the 92FS in .45ACP. However it was "considered" for about a hot cup of coffee.
I heard that the designers at Beretta thought the 92FS type frame would not be a well suited design to fire the .45ACP because there was not enough "metal" on the slide for the more powerful load. That's why I was told they came up with the model 8045 which has more "metal" on the slide and doesn't have an open top exposed barrel.
Makes sense to me. I don't know if it's true or not.

why is beretta moving away from that classic design. that was part of the appeal of the model 92FS i like it. why go changing to make it look like some futureistic polymer thing?

Their sales of the 92/96 series were dropping steadily, and had been for quite a while. The platform is a good one, but it has certain features that the public wasn't buying and LE agencies weren't either.
It is a wonderful gun to shoot, but the grip is too big and the trigger reach too long for many of the women that were being hired on as police officers. The mechanism is strong, but it requires relatively expensive replacement parts every 5,000 to 10,000 rounds. Most significantly, it's more expensive to make than a pistol with a plastic frame, and the higher cost alone led to Beretta losing most LE and Military contracts in recent years.
I like the design, and especially the Vertec series. I put 10,000 rounds through a stainless 92fs Vertec before leaving my last job, and that pistol still looked almost new inside and out. Still, it was expensive and too thick across the slide to carry IWB for extended periods. I hate to admit it because of how well that pistol served me, but I think there are better designs out there now.
