View Full Version : Wonder What Happened...
...to the Silver Bear 115gr rd? I wonder if the 94 gr might be a bit light for SD purposes.

I have carried a Makarov for several years. I only use 95 gr FMJ. There have been feed and fire problems with the heavier rounds.
I can hit 8 of 8 clay pidgeons at 20 yards with my Makarov. That's good enough for me.

The bullet quality control on the 120 grain JHP, and not as bad on the 115 grain, Silver Bear was terrible. The hollow point varied in size from near normal to super large, causing jams on feeding.
I've still got something left of a couple cases of the 120 grain Silver Bear.
Actually the 120 grain bullet and 115 grain are about the same weight, +-116 grains.
I like the heavy bullet for a defense round.
To give reliable feeding I seated the bullets a few thousands deeper in the case.
I was hopeful that Hornady or Speer would make a 115 grain JHP bullet for hand loaders but I don't think it will happen.
If they did, the bullet would no doubt make its way into factory ammo.
...has anybody tried this 94 gr JHP Silver Bear round AIM currently has for sale? According to the Barnaul web site, its rated at at least 1000 fps at the muzzle. Would it be suitable to carry as a defensive round?
I'd hate to buy 500-1000 rounds of it and then the next week AIM gets a shipment in of the 115 gr stuff.
