View Full Version : Beretta 92 Gov't Mags?
I've seen these at show for around $17 apiece. Are they good magazines...comparable to Mec-Gar maybe?

Chec-Mate. Don't get them anywhere near sand and they will be pretty decent for range mags.I wouldn't trust my life to them.
They are fine. When we (I'm in the Air Guard) got replacement mags for our Berettas they look just like the one in your picture. The new ones didn't have the thicker floorplate that factory Berettas came with. That was the only difference that I noticed. They have been fine for about 10 years or so that we have had them.

Every guy with a 9 that's deployed that I know of has generally had problems with them in sandy conditions because the cheap bastards use this crinkle finish on the interior instead of bluing and it collects stuff.
One sergeant I know who was in Afghanistan said to keep his mags working, he sanded the interiors completely free of it, and disassembled his mags after every mission or run into the countryside to keep all the crap out.

I've had the factory Beretta mags work flawlessly for me for over a decade. I've neglected them pretty good, just to see if they would work. All of them worked 100%.
That said, I've never had them in sand. I did drop my Beretta 92FS completely in sand on two occassions while in training, just to see if the gun would continue to work. It did. But, I will admit that the magazines were inside the mag-well, pretty much protected from sand entering them to any extent.
My friend who is a cop in So Cal, got back from Iraq and says that the Beretta mags are pieces of fecal matter in sand. I believe he agrees with THEBERETTAMAN 100% on that issue.
I just hope I don't ever have to drop them in sand. Working on the streets of Los Angeles, we don't really have a sand issue to worry about. But, THEBERETTAMAN, I think your advise about sand and Beretta mags does have merit and it's something to think about.

FACTORY Beretta mags are excellent.
However some of the gov't issue "Checkmate" made mags, are indeed large pieces of crap.
Ok for range use but I would not willingly use them in combat without complete disassembly.

Yeah, I'm not sure what the military issues. I would guess that they were factory Beretta mags.
Like I said, I've never ever experienced problems with factory Beretta mags and I carried them daily for 10 years (then I swithced to a USP.45).
But, I did take my 92F to Gunsite and Blackwater for training. Gunsite I shot 1200 rounds with very little oil on the gun the first day of training. After that I intentionally didn't clean or lube the gun/magazines. The gun never failed. At Blackwater, I shot 2000 rounds with no additional oil prior to the first day of training. Again, after that, the rest of the week went without cleaning or additional oil. The magazines and gun were 100% perfect.
Then again, I wasn't rolling around in said like the troops do in Iraq and Afghanistan.
I trust my life to a Beretta and it's FACTORY mags over my Hk USP. (I just like the .45ACP better and they never did make a 92FS in .45ACP). ;) ;) ;) ;)
Mec-Gar of Italy makes the Beretta Mags.

Most of the last 10 years of US Gov't mags were made by Checkmate, the cheap bastards. THOSE mags are the ones with problems.
I've yet to hear any real problem with Factory OEM Beretta mags (either Mec-Gar or Beretta marked), since they are actually blued not like Checkmate.

Hmmm, I own a couple of Mec-Gars and I've never had any problems with them. That being said, they look and feel a lot "cheaper" than Beretta OEM mags.
The Mec-Gar base plates are thinner than the OEM's and the feed lips appear to be slightly slightly thinner as well. The Beretta OEM's just plain "feel" more sturdy than the Mec-Gars do.
But again, the Mec-Gars have given me ZERO problems.
Does MecGar have a different process to make so called "OEM Beretta" mags, compared to when they make their own brand with the
"MecGar" logo stamped on them?

MecGar DOES NOT make Beretta OEM mags. This is a fallicy furthered by lots of internet rumor.Beretta mags are made by a company that Beretta owns called MDS.Meccanica Del Sarca in Italy. They also make them under their own name brand.MecGar does make the best most reliable "aftermarket" mags for the 92 and I have many many of them.

Got it! I thought all the while that Me-Gar was the one who supplied magazines for Berettas. Thanks for the correction.

Checkmate mags do indeed suck, at least until you have them NP3'd and replace the guts with original Beretta innards. Then they work just dandy!

.
You know who the real cheapie is-Uncle Sam!!! Zillion dollar war machines and they won't spend an extra buck to make the pistol reliable!
i have a pair of checkmates, and never had a problem with them yet. That said, i ONLY use my checkmates for range work. If needed my 92fs for carry/combat/social work, i'd stick to the MDS and mec mags i own.
