Well, right now i am civilian LEO, 22 years old, in south texas. did alot of my growing up in florida, and boy do i miss the water.

i am SERIOUSLY considering joing the CG, and going towards a gunner'e mate, and LEDET. and by seriously, i mean i WILL join once i can shed the pounds!!! but this is what i want to do, and i will do it!!

i looked at the AF, but the Law enforcement and armorer falls under security forces, so its up in the air if i can do what i want. same as the army. navy and marines, forget about it.

what i understand about GM's is you ARE the armorer and that LEDET is voluntary. si can do both of what i love. is this true?

but anyways, any inside advice out there? i did my ROTC time, and had all my buddies (including my brother) join the "other" branches, and i have learned to not trust a recruiter. not a matter of lies, but, the whole fine print, or leaving details out, and what not, i know they have a job to do...but i want the real deal.

So if there is any advice, input, suggestions, please share.

Thanks alot, and i can't wait to be on a boat again!!!

I'll take a shot at this (no pun intended) well...maye a little :)

I've been in the CG for 16yrs and work on the Texas Coast.

If you want L/E, go BM/MK
If you want to maintain weapons/armory, shoot for GM

All are good rating's, it just depends on what your interested in.

well, i like guns. no i LOVE guns!!
and i would really love the chance to learn all about them.
all kinds from 9mm to 50 cal and up...

it is my understanding the LE is like a side duty, on top of your main job (i.e. gunners mate, electrical, and what not...)
is that true?

Well...Sounds like GM is the rate for you. Those guy's play with guns all the time.

Yes...L/E is a collateral duty in the Coast Guard.
It’s something you can do in addition to your normal duties.

I can’t believe you want to leave the Hill Country; I've been trying to get back over thier forever.
I'm still waiting for a CG Station to open up on the Guadalupe. :)
