went to the greensboro gunshow today. (only saw 2 beef jerkey tables) found what i think was a good deal on an AR. picked up a S&W M&P for 900+tax. included was 2 mags (OKAY brand), detachable carry handle, and a hard case.

cleaned it up. took me all of 5 minutes to remember how to disassemble one. I havent broken an AR/M16 down since i was in the army over 10 years ago.

couple questions.
the adjustable buttstock feels wobbly. is this normal?
the take down pins are a B1@T*H to pop. i looked and it appears theres detents on the pins for when its both closed and open. will these loosen up over time?

I'll eventually add an optic at a later time. i need to get used to the irons again first. whats the best way to zero? like i said, its been a while.

slings?

my dept is doing a tactical rifle class in november that i'm attending. minimum 1000 rounds. we'll see how the gun holds up. but in case it goes kaput, whats some spare parts i need to have on hand?

thanks in advance.

I'll post pics when i find my camera.

Ok, I don't think you will have any problems with your M&P I have the base model and have put a couple thousand down range with no problems I have a red dot on a "offset rail" for lack of a better word and cowitness. I like this set up. My son (16 year old) shot very close groups at a 100 yards with irons only. We used the USMC sight in to zero the rifle and found it very easy, maybe because that is what I have used in the past. I don't find my stalk to be sloppy at all it's a little lose and has always been this way.

Probably, but make sure they're well lubed, as I've seen a few that were installed bone-dry (which doesn't help, and might hinder, their operation). Put a drop of your favorite gun oil/lube on the pin body and in the tiny detent groove, and work the pin back and forth a few times to distribute the lube. Wipe off any excess that's leaking out from around the edges of the pin holes, and you should be good to go.

thanks for the replies. i'm already shopping for accessories :)

according to the equipment list for the class i'm taking, i need the following:
3+ magazines
sling
sight tool (i've got a nail somewhere that i can use)
2 flashlights (mounted preferred)

i'll prolly order mags from 44mag.com. i've been researching slings and i'll prolly go with a single point sling. saw some from specter that looked like what i want. i'll also need to get a single point mount. whats most affordable?

for the mounted flashlight, i dont have rails. (i'm probably not going to get rails anytime in the near future due to cost), so whats an alternative method to mounting a light besides using a piece of inner tube?

thanks

Take more than 3 mags to the class (more like 10). The Specter gear sling (MOUT) is a good one for the money. So is the TROY and BFG.

To mount a light, you can either use the MI #01 (front sight mounted rail) or go with a rail that mounts into the vent holes in your HG's.

For a light, a SureFire G2 with a Z32 shock isolated bezel and a VLTOR G-Series mounts is an affordable weaponlight.

Congrats! Sounds like a pretty good deal on the rifle.

44mag.com is good for magazines, I've bought a few from them and they are good mags, well packaged and promptly shipped.

I have a three point sling from Specter that I really like, and I've heard good things about their single points too.

Good luck with your course.
