Thanks Bugout.
The original Romanian AKM-clone was designated Pistol Mitraliera 63 (AIM). This is probably what the 63 is referencing.

Right on!
This is what Linx's website says
One notable feature about the late 2005 - present models of WASRs is that they are being constructed from part-kits de-milled from Real Romanian AKMs (unissued) produced in the late 70s to mid 80s.
Indeed, the designation for the Romanian AKM is Pistol Mitraliera Model 1963. It is interesting they call the AKM an "automatic pistol". However the AK-74 is referred to as Pusca Mitraliera Model 1986, which translates to "automatic rifle".
I wonder if they ran out of new barrels at Cugir and are instead using parts kits, for all practical purposes, to crank out WASR's? It would make good sense since they can't ship the barreled parts kits here anymore

So does this mean the current WASR's didn't start out as single stacks? If they were military you wouldn't think so.
Bugout, thanks for the link.

Come to think of it, they must still start out as single stacks or they would have the dimples wouldn't they.

Yes .... AFAIK the receivers are produced in a different facility than the ones going on "normal" AK's ..... the "civilianized" single-stack WASR receiver was not contrapted only to satisfy the then-in-effect AWB, but also the laws in Romania, where the "slimwell" is/was the only way to have a "sporterized" AK. The receiver has a reinforcement/restrictor plate welded inside to make it a PITA to open one with a Dremel tool ( been there, done that ;) ).
If you remember, the SAR, which has a full milspec receiver, also has the "third hole" marked on both sides  ..... that might have also contributed to the cessation of imports on that fine rifle.

Yup, thanks for the info graveman.
I had a couple of SAR's a few years back.
My only problem with the WASR's is of course, the mag wobble.
A little wobble doesn't bother me. But my last WASR's mag wagged like a dogs tail.
I was able to pick from a selection on my current one, and got one with no mag wobble at all.
I even have to file some on my Chinese mags to get them to go in.

Bugout,
You did well. I just expanded on it a little bit, I like to get in the details and stuff. Just happen to know a few extra little things about the Romanian AK's since I speak the language, and still have some contacts in the "old country".
Randy,
I have experienced fitting problems with Chinese mags in just about every non-Chinese AK I picked up. Before giving up on the 7.62x39, I had this one Chinese mag that wouldn't fit properly except in a MAK-90. Go figure !
Ballistic,
Anytime!
