hi! I installed meprolight on my g19 a few months ago and had to take it to the gunsmith twice because it became loose and 'swiveled'. The 3rd time, the head of the screw broke off, so I had to buy a new set. After shooting less than 500 rounds with the new front sight, it loosened again. The gunsmith used loctite on it everytime, and I am confused as to why it loosens by itself a lot of times.

Any ideas on how to solve this problem?

Maybe used wrong type of Loc-Tite. I used the red one, 262 I think, on my front sight. 300 rounds later still is snug.

There can be no contaminants--think almost surgical clean. Grubby hands, french fry fingers, skin oils, none of these will fly.

Clean even new parts with denatured alcohol, and let dry. Spot clean the slide with denatured alcohol and let dry.

Use just a drop of red or blue Loctite on threaded components.

Key: The final alignment movement must be a tightening motion, not a loosening one.

Let dry 24-hours before shooting or polishing.

I had to remount Judy's old Big Dot front sight (which came loose), and after carefully cleaning the old gunk off of it, used the above proceedure, using blue Loctite. It stayed put for a couple of thousand rounds before she switched to Trijicons.

The new Trijicon front sight also had to be remounted (the shop got it crooked :frown: ), and red Loctite has also held it solid for a couple of thousand rounds.

My new DP Adj/FO front sight was installed with red Loctite and it hasn't moved in over 2000-rounds.

Hi folks. Just got this from a fella named Walter:

Hate to bother you again, but I really hate to see somebody suffering like this. To begin with, she didn't need to buy a "new set", due to a lost front sight. Brownell's and Ameriglo both sell individual front sights.

Also, the use of Red (271) Loctite will fix the problem. Threads should be thoroughly degreased.

Thanks for your help guys!

I did think of ordering just the front sight, but couldn't wait for it to arrive as I live outside the US and it takes forever to get here. The local gun stores only carry by set.

If it does happen again, maybe I will just install it myself to be sure that it is fully degreased.

Thanks again!

If you decide to use loctite to solve the loose sight problem, I recommend blue loctite over the red. With the blue, if you ever decide to change sights, you can rather easily remove the sight (however, shooting will not loosen the sight).

With the red loctite, you can also remove the sight but it will be much more of a chore because the red loctite is considered to be a permanent fix to a "loose" problem.
