I currently own a Colt AR 15 16" and I'm looking to get a 20" upper for it. Can I use a upper from any other company (Bushmaster, RRA, etc.)on my Colt? I have also seen in some catalogs old Vietnam ear uppers from I think Colt, could one of these also be used?

One of the older M16/SP1 uppers would make a nice addition to your collection. Some will require an adaptor to fit if you have the larger commercial spec pivot pin bosses (.315 vice the mil .250).

You'll most likely need the adapter.

Most other brand uppers and M16 uppers have a small push pin take down pin.The earlier Colt AR-15's had a thread pivet pin instead. The holes are larger in those.Colt later changed to the smaller holes with a push pin take down pin. There are aftermarket pins and adapters. There are oversized push pins to fit older Colts. And there are adapters to mix small hole uppers on large hole lowers. How does the front of your lower receiver attach to the upper receiver?

It has a push pin in the front and back.

If both push pins are the same diameter(the small size) you should be able to use just about any other brand upper. There is sometimes a bit a difference but there isn't suppose to be any.It might be tight and require fitting or it might fit loosely. But this can happen even within the same brand upper and lower. With computer machined parts these days it shouldn't be a problem.

+1 on A1s. An AR as God intended; light, lotsa sight radius, lotsa MV. Get some A1 furniture and sit down to watch 'Full Metal Jacket'.
