hey all. i'm ready to put a sling plate adapter on my S&W mp-15. the castle nut is staked to the rear plate (sorry, i'm still learning terminology). how hard will it be to remove the rear plate? will it cause any damage to the castle nut since its staked to the plate? will i need to restake the new sling adapter to the castle nut or can i just use the semi-perm (blue) loc-tite?

i dont have my camera on me, but the staking job that was done hits both the plate and the nut (if that makes any sense).

thanks
Neil

Depending on how good the stake job is, you might just be able to turn it with a spanner wrench (or a hammer and a punch). You might also have to get a small flathead screw driver and push back the punches (had to do this on a Colt once).

When you re-install the castle nut, just use a lot of torque to install it. Loctite is a bad idea.

If you damage the castle nut, don't worry as they are cheap items ($7).

awesome. thanks for the reply Grant. attached is a pic of the stake job. the nut is staked on both left and right side. it doesnt look like the stakes are cut into the nut too deeply so i hope it shouldnt be an issue. sorry bout the poor quality, my camera's not that great.

Those don't look all that deep, should be easy.

Nelybarg,

Thats not deep at all. Pull it off, put your new piece on, then after you tighten your castle nut back down, restake it.

Once you do it, you will laugh at how simple it is. Don't worry about the castle nut, I've never heard of anyone breaking one changing it out.

Loctite can be difficult to remove, which is why many people recommend it not be used. If its a gun, go ahead and loctite it. If its a weapon, stake it.

Like Stick said, that staking should come off with the wrench. I'm an advocate of Loctite (medium strength, like Loctite Threadlocker Blue) or staking. I've seen inadvertent disassembly during heavy use without either in place.

One word for you Galling!

Anything that has torque on it (barrel nut/castle nut) shouldn't have loctite on it as you may find yourself having to cut it off!

I do use loctite on ANY screw that is on the weapon though.

I believe that RRA is the only ones that loctite on their castle nut. I have spent many an hour trying to get them off. :soap:
