I've been thinking real hard lately about treating myself to an AK-type platform lately. I've come to appreciate the visceral pleasures they offer over the last few years, and I think it would be a good choice for me to pick one up, just for some fun outdoor shooting and that sort of thing. I'm not too concerned with using it as a home defense weapon, just for kicks.

What I'm interested in hearing from YOU guys is any advice you have on what I should be looking for in a Kalashnikov-style rifle for said purpose. Guidelines, information, suggestions for caliber or model, recommendations on accessories or kit, do and do-not's, that sort of thing.

I look forward to the feedback. :)

price range helps

Aresenal Inc. in Las Vegas, Nevada make some of the best quality AKs. Vector Arms is also very good.

Well to be honest I don't really know how much even a solid bare-bones AK costs or SHOULD cost, so I left it open.

Just something to think about re caliberif the recent shortages in Russian ammo happen again, you'll find it gets very expensive to shoot. You might consider one chambered in 223...Just a point to ponder...

The shortage is just about gone "PLENTY AROUND" the prices is up .If you go with an ak that shoots 223 , the ammo will cost even more then the 7.62x39 ammo .

Oh yeah a BIG + 1 on the sa m7 !!!

I agree on the Arsenal, worth it....and you can really trick out some AKs (I've seen ones with a lot of M4 type accessories added etc).

My first was a Romy G built on a Ewbanks Gen 2.

400.00 OTD

AKs are like old trucks, some are pretty and expensive, some are ugly and cheap but all of them work.

If you have the means, roll your own, just make sure to be in check w/922r.

These aren't toys, they're working guns for contractors in Iraq, and other guys who just prefer using the AK.

AR type sights on the dustcover, modified safety and mag release so the shooting hand can activate them, and a rail fore-end to mount a light. That's about it.

+1 on that...I built my Romy G for about $200. If you just want to buy a complete gun...You cant go wrong with the SA M7...great gun.

Murph, Dont feel bad. Most AK folk are purists. Hell, when I get an AR, its going to have the triangluar fore-end and 3-prong FH

Vector makes nice AK47s. You can find them at East Coast Firearms and Atlantic Firearms (probably elsewhere too). Price was around $500 + shipping and transfer fees. Seems like a high quality build to me, but I don't know much about AK's. I have the classic model (not the underfolder). Vector Arms (http://www.vectorarms.com/indexframe.html)

Arsenal makes the best, and they price accordingly ( $700 and up )

Vector makes nice affordable rifles ( $550 )

Century makes a nice Yugoslavian underfolder ( $450 )

Century also imports the WASR "dogs" ( $350 )

If you get a build, ensure it's made by a reputable company and not by Bubba in his shed. If you see screws holding it together, leave it alone. Same for welds. If the receiver does not have a name ( maker or importer ), or says "Vulcan Arms", leave it alone. I advise against building an AK if you've never had a factory built one.

Some will badmouth Wasr 10's but mine for $359.00 could not have been any better so far. It has smooth blonde wood that barely needed a refinish (took minimal time) Shoots about a 4 to 4 1/2 inch group at 100yds. My BAR shoots 1" groups with a 12 power scope, but with open sights like the WASR I'm not sure I could get under 3 or 4 inches even with the BAR.
WASR will blow 30 rounds downrange in the blink of an eye with no malfunctions.
I have seen some WASR's that don't look too great. Stock looks like it was cut from a pine tree with rivets showing.

If I couldn't afford an Arsenal I'd get a Yugo underfolder.
