View Full Version : TLE/RL II field strip problems (NOT a newbie)
I went to the range today and had a good time shooting 3 of my Kimbers, my G30, my Kel-Tec P32, and a friend's guns.
When I got home, I decided to field strip and clean my weapons right away. Then I hit a snag. The TLE/RL II won't come apart. Now I know I have taken this thing apart before without problems, and I can still take down the stainless model I have, but this one just won't budge.
I took a couple quick videos so you could see exactly what I'm doing. In the first one, I unsuccessfully attempt to strip the TLE/RL II. In the second, I do the exact same thing to the stainless TLE/RL II, and it works perfectly.
(There's a bit of lube on my hand in the second vid, incase you're wondering why I'm fumbling a bit..she's a slick one!);)

So what do you guys think? It seems to me that the series II junk is holding up the slide, but I didn't touch the grip safety at all. And I did the EXACT same thing with the EXACT same gun in the second vid, and it works just fine. I did this with both guns a few times, BTW. Same results everytime.
The Stainless model did not go to the range today, the other one did. And it shot just fine.
?? ??
If you strip it by turning the bushing first and taking the spring tension off, does it do the same thing? If not, then the FL guide rod is "popping" up when you remove the slide stop and move the slide. The guide rod head interferes and can hang up the slide. If you can move the slide forward enough, you can hold the FLGR down with your fingers as you remove the slide much as you would do with a GI plug when capturing the spring with your hand as you take off the slide.
If it's the push rod, it gets caught in front of the FP stop plate. If it gets stuck there, you need to slip the MSH down and pull out on the GS to let the rod fall into the frame. If this hasn't happened before, it doesn't sound like it's a push rod fit issue.
What's strange is that it did work before. Why the pushrod hangs up now I do not know.
All I know is that I had to drop the magwell to get the slide off. And that's NOT something I should have to do.
So if I replace the firing pin with a series 70 firing pin, I can take that POS push rod out and forget about it, right?
I could care less if the thing is in there or not, but I'm tired of screwing with this thing. That little push rod sucks all the fun out of the shooting experience for me. I was having a nice, relaxing day and planned to continue it by cleaning my guns and maybe grilling some brats later on. Now I spent an unreasonable amount of time screwing with this damn gun, and I'm guessing it was the cause of this headache. I'll throw the POS in the trash before I do this dance again.
Drop the magwell? Did you change the MSH on this gun? If so, that's the problem. You didn't fit it to the grip safety and push rod. See my response to you on the other forum for the way to fix it.
(If you changed the MSH, then you can't blame Kimber for this one.)

I meant the MSH, not magwell.
No, it's not Kimber's fault, I was just mad because it wasn't doing what I wanted it to do. So I threw a fit. I feel better now.
:)
(I thought that name looked familiar :wavey: )

+1
The only thing I could tell from the video is that you hadn't let the tension out of the recoil assembly first by rotating the bushing out of the way. Also, I'm assuming the magazine had been removed??
Sorry if you've already solved your issue.... just stopped by your post.

I just had a guy come into our store with a Kimber that he was having the same problem with. He was trying to take the slide lock out and disassemble it that way, but didn't take out the barrel bushing or recoil spring first. The guide rod was locking the slide in place with the spring tension on it.
It's very simple. Drop the magazine. Rotate the barrel bushing and recoil spring and plug through the front, and then remove the bushing. Take out the slide lock. Without depressing the grip safety (if you depress the grip safety, it can keep the slide from coming off and going back on), remove the slide. You may need to turn the pistol upside down to let gravity pull the guide rod up the the barrel. Finish disassembly as normal, and reassemble in reverse.
I'll admit that I don't like the Series II crap, but I have yet to see it malfunction and I don't think that's the case here. It just looks like you're doing things out of order, and the spring tension is causing the guide rod to lock the slide in place.
