View Full Version : Nastyl little scratch on the front of my Glock slide, any suggestions?
Ok, call me a fool for caring about this, but the other day the "so callled" impossible happened, I ordered a fobus holster to practice drawing from at the range, when I got home and filed stripped my G21 for cleaning I noticed a nice 1 inch shiny gash on my slide. I have no idea how a plastic holster could have done this to the tough glock slide, I think i may have grazed one of the bolts. I tried everything to buff this out, it looks nasty and I have only had my Glock for a month! I notice age old Glock slides without a blemish on them. I know this is ridiculous to really be concerned about, but for some reason, I want it keep it in good condition. Does anyone have a sufgestion or idea for buffing this out somehow? Thank you very much in advance!

Vrex,
I have a 3 month old G35 that is "scarred" from a kydex holster. It's just cosmetic damage, like yours. I got over it. Just shoot it and enjoy. All guns that are used end up scratched. Only new guns and "pampered guns" (carried everywhere in the factory box or similar) stay new looking.
There's really no fix (that I'm aware of) unless you want to send the slide in for a complete refinishing. That's fairly pricey, around $100 IIRC. If it makes you feel better you could dab some paint along the scratch, but that'll come off fairly easily.
Can you post a picture?
Koski
these pics were taken with a cheap webcam so they will be hard to see...in one day of use, my advantage arms finish was toasted, and my invincible glock tenifer (on the left in pic) scarred by a piece of plastic. I dont mind wear and tear, but im still in my "new car" phase with my g21 (which i love shooting at the range, complete with Truglos, extended slide lock, extended mag release, custom grip tape grips and a sweet ghost 3.5 connector....fun!) and I have this new shiny pistol with a nasty gash down the side....in this crappy blurry pic you may have trouble seeing it, the A arms damage is easier to see. Ugh, I just wanted an inexpensive holster to practice drawing from, and it wiped out two slides in less than an hour!!!!!!!!!

(a) back off on the tension screw a bit that indexes on the muzzle-end of the gun or (if you want it that tight),
(b) live with the character marks.
Do you have someone you don't care for much, that you can sell the Fobus to, so you can order 1 of these (http://www.comp-tac.com/ct_setcant.html) or 1 of these (http://www.comp-tac.com/ct_ctac.html)?

G-Code makes a fine holster priced between Fobus and Comp-Tac.. well fitted and easy on the finish.
Word of advice next time loosen the adj. screws as much as possible then insert the pistol and tighten it up a lil turn at the time till you get about where you like the retention to be.
Also, I've heard of ppl using touch-up auto paint to dab over scratches.. don't think it'll do much other then make it less noticable though.
You may have scratched the black phosphate finish with that cheap Fobus, but you did not scratch through the tenifer treatment, which is impregnated into the metal and has a Rockwell Hardness of about 68-70.

+1 what Danny said.
I don't know about the finish on your Advantage Arms but, the finish on your Glock will still not rust, if that's your concern. Even if you removed all the black finish, your pistol would not rust.

Have over 25K presentations on a G34 from either a Cen-Dex or KyTac Kydex holster so most of the relatively soft phosphate finish is worn off or so thin you can "see" thru it. Actually have poslished the bottom of the slide at dust cover where the frame rubs on it and abrades, etc. Only point is if you really use and practice with the gun it's going to show wear on the slide sooner or later no matter how much it's babied.
Only thing personally ever bothered doing is filling in the "scratch" with tip of a very thin felt pen {"Sharpie", etc.} Take a file to the damn Fobie and use a foam sanding block on it if it's scuffing other area's. Just like a good car, don't put "rim protector's" on a good handgun!

Would it do any harm to take the super fine 000 steel wool and some rem oil to the nagging little scratch?

It's not going to make it black again.

I did the same thing as you did a few years ago. Brand new and scrached it with that same holster. Things like that bug me to no end for some reason. ( Like I can't get it off my mind). So I sent it off to glock and got it refinished for $45.00 at the time. Iv'e now had it three years in and out of my leather holster and not one little scatch on it at all.Plus I could sleep at night after I had it fixed.
I even bought another new glock as to always have one cherry one. But the old one never got old looking. Still looks the same as when I got it. I feel your pain
I did notice that the cold blueing works on the brass that hits the slide that bounces off the side boards at the range. Then oil over it and wipe off. Now I just go to places in the hills to shoot.
If your anything like me you will never get over it:rofl: Unless you fix it.

"Would it do any harm to take the super fine 000 steel wool and some rem oil..."
Are you missing a point here? The black phosphate is simply a cosmetic coating that's not very durable to begin with. Using even super-fine wool on it will only remove more of it by thinning it around the scratch IN it. Tennifer isn't damaged as it's not part of the black stuff at all.
If it really bothers you that much may as well pay for one of the new and much harder/durable, epoxy/ceramic coatings available?
Yes, it does bother me that much, im just the kind of guy when i get a ding in my car I call dent wizard the next day and shell out 100 bucks to suck it out. I dont know why certain little things like that bother me so much. Cal I thank you for your empathy, it will indeed bother me till I get it fixed. What was your turnaround time when you sent it to Glock? There is a guy local to me who refinishes slides I might use this most unfortunate scratch to get my slide in OD green (i 'm quite sure there are people reading this thinking I am absolutley ridiculous...but the thing is, I have no problem with normal wear...but an angry gash on the side of a brand new slide will bother me endlessly! I WILL reply to this thread when I finlly get it fixed whatever route I take. Thanks for the replies

That is how I am. Thats why I fixed mine.
I'm the same way with everything. Your a profectionist like me. Some times it cost you but at least you stuff looks good. And others see you have nice looking things.
My self I would stick to the glock finish it is tuff. It seems to be the best stock finish out of all the pistols.
I've heard to many bad stories of other finishes on a glock. At least you know what you will be getting when you get it back from them. Darn fobus holsters.
I thought the finish would wear on the new slide, but it never did. By the way you only have to send the slide back not the whole pistol. Thats why I bought the second glock. Now I have two cherry ones. And I have had that pistal in and out of my leather holster maybe 6 times a day for 2 and a half years. Not a mark on it.
Once you get the pistal back you don't even think of the money anymore. Because you feel so good that your pistol is back in shape.
Alot of people don't care if they have gashes or marks on their guns but when I see them pull them out of their holster I think to myself yuck how embarising looks like a piece of junk. I care what my stuff looks like. All my stuff looks good. It's hard being a profectionist. But your things do look good. And others do notice how nice your stuff is. By the way mine was a little scratch one ince long.
Just call Glock and ask them how much and how long it will be. That's what I did. Good luck:thumbsup:

Vrex, I am embarrassed to admit I am just like you when it comes to scratches on my guns too! I wont holster them for that reason. I will obsess over the tiniest imperfection, it's an illness I have to live with! I would send it to Virgil Tripp and have it Hard Chromed, very hard to mess that finish up!!

I carry a G27 as my duty weapon in a Fobus holster and have done so for 2 maybe 3 years. I take it out of the holster every night to secure/hide it for easy access but to keep out of my daughter's reach. I had the scratches too, but got over it. However, when I saw that it was also rubbing the trigger guard smooth, I ordereed a blackhawk SERPA. Check your trigger guard to see if it has worn it too.
Mapp-how would one get in contact with Mr Tripp?

If you do a search of Tripp on any gun forum you will find he does some of the best work around and they are very pleasent to deal with.
i also feel your pain... i had a great looking model 17 that i have had since 1991. i babied that one... i took a 2 day class from TDSA in may and my fobus holster did the same thing... it made me so mad... i put it in the garbage and replaced it with a kydex from unckle mikes.... my slide has a 1.5 inch scratch on the right side (i shoot left handed) of the slide from the rivets that hold the holster together.. i also bought another mod 17....

Holy s--t! I thought I was the only neurotic around here :) I am exactly the same way. I have a superficial ding in the top interior of my G26 frame when the recoil spring assembly was not seated properly before inserting the slide (a common screw up with the G26/27) and as a result, the sharp circular end of the assembly dug into the polymer - and of course locked things up. I managed to buff it out a bit but to this day, it drives me nuts everytime I see it, and I am seriously considering getting a new G26. Can you belive this c--p!? I need serious help. It's just cosmetic and in no way does it interfere with the performance of the gun plus....who sees it except me when I field strip!! Maybe if enough folks tell me I'm certifiable, it won't bother me as much.
Anyway, I am glad I'm not alone. :)

i sometimes carry my 23 in a fobus and mine has the same sort of scratch on it . It is like a new truck you are all worried about it until you get your first ding in it and after that it is ok. I was kind of P.O. about my scratch also at first but now it adds character. my 23 is my carry gun so i expect it to get the used look. On the other hand my new 21 is my drawer gun and does not have a mark on it.
I care what what my firearms look like, I have no damage but lots of wear.
The look like they have seen lots of use.
That to me is more attractive than the perfect finish of a safe queen.
I bought the expensive Fixt K10 for my Glock 19, * * * * ing scratched the * * * * out of it. They could polish the damn screws inside or something. I hate having scratches on my guns, I am anal as hell when it comes to these things as well and understand fully how much it detracts from the weapon. I am actually considering having the whole thing done up by gunsmith just because of the scratch.
FYI, AAC, the company that does Cans, also has access to do Tennifer or Melonite finishes. Glock is full of * * * * that it can be done in the US due to EPA regs.

You guys are living in cheap holster hell! Buy something quality from Blade-Tech or Talon Tactical, or if you prefer leather go with Milt Sparks, Mitch Rosen, or Kramer.
There is one reality though, ANY GUN WORN HOLSTERED AND DRAWN WILL SHOW SOME WEAR ON CONTACT POINTS. Get over it and use the gun as it was designed, as a tool.
color it in with a Sharpie (permanent marker)that will help.
