View Full Version : PM9 longterm durability & reliability
First off my PM9 has been great after break-in. I've had it for one year and have hundreds of rounds thru it (but probably less than 1k... I'd have to check my records).
Is there any concensus on the longterm durability of the PM9, i.e. if you get a good one will it be reliable during its normal lifetime? Or, has there been examples of Kahrs self destructed over time?

Hey JKG,
What part of Portland are you in? We could go shooting together sometime if you like.
As for the durability, the PM9 is known for two problems: FTB and barrel peening. Neither of those will kill the frame, so, in a sense they will not kill the firearm. However, if you had to pay for a new slide and a new barrel out of pocket, I bet you could have almost purchased a new PM9.
Maybe I didn't actually answer the question.

My personal opinion, a pistol like the PM9 is designed as a defensive (or backup) weapon and usually is not shot constantly. Thousands of rounds is not what it was designed for. "Carry alot, shoot a little"
I bought two pm9s years ago and "broke" them in...without any failures of any kind. Now I shoot them about twice a year about 50 rounds each time.
tabor-pm-9, I'm in the process of looking for pistol ranges now. I usually shoot out in Tillamook State Forest, but am looking for a range for after work. Where do you shoot?
I've thought about The Place To Shoot and Johnson Creek Gun Club. Leaning towards Johnson Creek.

My opinion of The Place to Shoot can be found here (http://www.glocktalk.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=6878181#post6878181).
In short: they suck, their air quality sucks, their knowledge of federal and state law sucks, they make you buy their ammo, they won't even let you shoot your self defense ammo unless you buy it from them, they charge $9/box for WWB 9mm, they suck, ..., they suck, ...
And they won't get another red cent from me. I was shooting in the Tillamook forest just thismorning.

I once asked Kahr a similar question about the MK9. I was told that it had been tested to 10,000 or 15,000 rounds (they were a little vague on the exact number). I would think the PM9 should also last at least 10,000 rounds.
I highly recommend Tri-County Gun Club. Although the pistol range sucks a little (25 and 50 yard targets only), the Action Range is worth the price of joining. You need to take a free certification class (lasts about 6 hours) and then you have access to 14 private pits. We go down every weekend and no more than 4 or 5 are in use at any time even during competitions, unless there is IPSC and that's only a couple more in use on average.
