Picked up a new P45, with night sights, Sunday 09/10/06 for $625. The weather sucked the rest of the afternoon forcing the much anticipated range trip to Monday morning. I was really looking forward to firing this pistol and comparing the differences between it and the P40 that I have carried every day the last 2 years.
I field stripped it and ensured that it was clean and properly lubricated. It was. I had purchased 1 white box Winchester (100rnds) and two boxes of Federal HydraShoks (40rnds). The first 12 rounds I fired from 10 paces and at a pretty fast pace. I was able to cover the group with my palm easily. Same distance slow fire and the group tightened up noticeable. From that point I moved back to 7 then 15 yards and the accuracy was the same.
The checkering on the front and backstrap was rough, but I remember that I had the same with the P40 when it was new. Now 2000+ rounds later the checkering still grips but is not as rough.
The recoil was what surprised me. The P40’s recoil is stout with a fair amount of muzzle flip. The P45 while the recoil was similar did not have as much muzzle flip and I was able to follow up with the second shot a lot quicker.
Now to the horrible Kahr FTE, FTF, failure to do everything else…
NOT A SINGLE HICUP!
That being said I will have two more similar trips to the range with different ammo this week before I shelf the P40.
