Marks and chip on barrel crown

Hello all.

I have a relatively new glock 19 with less than 1000 rounds through it. Cleaned it 4-5 times. It has strange marks on the barrel crown (the conical part) that seem to match up with the rifling inside the barrel. Also a small chip on the crown halfway up the left side (see picture)-- is that normal or is something wrong?

I clean it with a standard metal bore brush, from the breech end all the way out the end of the barrel then pulling it back through. I've watched my gunsmith do it and as far as I know I am doing the same thing. The only ammo I've used is Remington UMC. I'm new to shooting so maybe this is normal? Thanks for your help.

From what I am seeing by the pic, Im seeing nothing abnormal. If you look close at the bevel, what may look like chips is carbon build-up. and it may flake off from time to time. If you are very concerned ,Have a gunsmith look it over ,but from the pic, everything looks normal.

Oh and BTW I would suggest you use a hoppes nylon brush instead of a metal brush.

A picture on a monitor isn't the best way to observe something small, but it looks just fine to me from what I can see.

At about the 9:00 position I see a slight break in the ring of light, is that the chip you're referring to?

If you're using a brass/bronze brush you're probably ok and not doing any damage. Honestly, with only 4-5 cleanings through this barrel you haven't done anything harmful. Don't EVER use a steel brush, even the ones that promise to do no damage.

If it IS a chip, then it could concievably cause a degradation in accuracy, though you probably wouldn't notice it. Look at it under a magnifiying lens and see if it's actually a chip or (as some have mentioned) just a bit of bullet metal stuck there.

All, thanks for your responses. I'll assume it is normal marking and not worry about it. It was shooting just fine today.

I've been using a standard brass/bronze brush. What is the advantage to using a Hoppes nylon brush?

I just like it, dont have to worry about scratching the bore and I can scrub the barrel good with it. As mentioned NEVER use a steel brush. bronze or nylon!

The old bronze brush is still my favorite 'cause I can put some horsepower into it if needed, especially on something that has lead going down the bore. Anyone who's gonna use steel, please contact me and I'll provide an FFL for delivery of the gun you're donating. :clown:
