I have ordered a 590A1 and a Surefire fore-end. Surefire indicates that the "accessory Lug" needs to be removed. Is this a simple thing to do or will I need parts or special tools? How will I mount my bayonet after the lug is removed? ;)
Since this is my first tactical shotty I am really excited!!! I should have the 590 in a week but the Surefire will take 4-8 according to my LGS.

No advice? I plan on mounting a sling (a Victor looks quite interesting). Does removing the bayo lug mean that I loose the sling attachment point?
My shotty is in but I am out of town and will have to wait until Monday to pick it up.

SureFire makes a model specifically for the 590A1 called the 623A01. The light rides a little lower to get around the bayonet lug. You can't fix a bayonet with the light installed, but you don't have to permanently alter your weapon to install the light.
If you use a regular 623, you'll need to grind the bayonet lug off. I'm not sure how you'd do that; you'd need to check with a gunsmith. If you do remove the bayonet lug, you will not be able to fix a bayonet.

Thanks SGIH! That's the information I am looking for!
Now I need to talk with my dealer to change my order.
If I cannot purchase the Surefire 623A01 what are my other options? Can I use a Picatinny rail forend without a vertical grip or will it chew up my hand too much?

I dunno. Doesn't sound comfortable to me.
I'd just call SureFire directly on Monday and try to order the 623A01. It may not be all that easy to find, otherwise. I got mine from Arizona Gun Runners (http://www.arizonagunrunners.com), but now the SureFire section of their web site just links directly to SureFire. You could try calling AGR, though.

Thanks SGIH!
I will let you know what I discover. I emailed SureFire and hope you get a response from them tomorrow.
Doesn't anyone use a light on their 590A1? Or does everyone grind off the accessory lug? I hate the thought of doing that to a brand new weapon....

Seriously, how many times have you needed a bayonet on a shotgun in the last year ???
The light is FAR more useful. The only use I have for a bayonet on my 590A1 is when I'm at the trap range.....I need the bayo (in sheath) to make it long enough so it will sit in the gun racks. Think about how long most trap guns are !
Mine also has factory installed threads for the screw-in chokes, a heat shield & the ghost ring sight setup.
When I need it, the light being offset doesn't affect it's usefulness.
good luck

I agree that I will have no use for the bayonet lug (you can't be serious about the trap range :laughabove: )
How is your light offset? What light are you using?

Actually, I AM serious about the trap range, bayonet & all. It does tend to mess with the heads of the guys with the $4000.00 trap guns !
I'm using a Surefire light, but not the model they sell for the 590. I machined up my own mount from 6061-T6 aluminum & attached it to the spare forend. It's fitted with the cheap Surefire G2 light...the plastic one, as I have several of them around the house as my regular flashlights. This way if I break one (not likely) a spare is readily avaliable.
As far as my 590A1, I have chokes from Imp. Cyl all the way up to the Extra Full lead shot only Turkey tube. I think there are 5 or 6 total. I get my best 100 yd slug groups using the Mod. tube. It will stay on a bowling pin about 8 out of 10 shots in that setup.
The reason for making my own light bracket is because I'm cheap & I have a Bridgport Mill at my disposal.

If one was to "remove" the lug how would the area be refinished?

I have decided to use the railed surefire forend with a surefire 6p. I have not decided on which switch I will use yet.
Thanks for all the input. I will post a pic when I have it assembled.
my 590a1 is parkerized
you would have to have the pieces reparkerized
