The barrel of my K9 is suffering from some kind of impact damage, and I wonder whether is it what I have read here on the forum as "peening." I apologize in advance for my imprecise use of terms and for the fact that I don't have a digital camera.
The "impact damage" (for want of a more descriptive term) is on the top of the squared off part of the barrel that is perpendicular to the rounded part of the barrel. In turn, this affected surface of the barrel is perpendicular to the long, smooth surface of the barrel that sits in the open air when the barrel is mounted in the slide.
Where there was originally a smooth surface running down to the round part of the barrel, the top of that surface has been worn away (or battered away) and there is now a small, highly reflective "shelf" a couple of mm down from the top.
If this is peening, or some other problem, and what are the possible consequences? Thanks alot for reading all this! I thought that there was some description of peening in prior posts but the search engine just didn't provide me with a description, as opposed to complaints that it existed.
