I just picked up a first Generation G-17 without the 6 part
upgrade(it has the black finished parts). It seems to shoot
good but the slide does not lock back( I am not limp wristing it).
I heard that this is a common problem with Gen. 1 G17's. Is this true? I heard that Glock will machine the slide notch a little
to cure this problem. Is there truth to this also? I hope I can
cure it by replacing the followers in the NFML mags because I don't
really want to send it back to Glock. Oh ya, the serial number
is in the AT range(1986!). Thanks...
Check the slide stop lever as the spring may be worn. Also check the springs in the magazines as they may need to be changed. You can also take the G17 to a local GSSF match and the armorer there should do the upgrade for free.

The notch to catch the slide was very shallow on those guns. You may want to try extra power springs to engage the follower to the slide stop harder. Is the metal warn and folded over in the notch? If so you'll want to have it fixed by a reputable gunsmith. ST

DMNSPD and SkippyThe, thanks for the replies. The slide notch does seem to be smaller than on the newer Glocks, but it does not appear to be worn. I'll check the springs also. The funny thing is when I manually pull the slide back with an empty mag in place it locks back every time. I looked at it carefully using dummy rounds and it
seems the follower does not push the slide stop up with much force.
Maybe some Wolff springs will help. I guess I can live with the slide not locking back, it is way better than locking open in the middle of a loaded mag. Still, it makes reloading a little easier..:)
A pic would be nice but I'm bettin' SkippyThe has the answer. The slightly shallower notch does require the other components to be fully up to snuff. Considering that Glock itself decided to make a change, machining the tiny bit for the change is not a big deal, or you can send the slide to Glock if you like. If it matters that it's completely original just make sure your other components (mag springs, follower, slide stop lever spring, etc.) are in good order and it should be fine.
