View Full Version : Anyone broken a Cougar?
I asked this question on the Beretta website.
I want to hear your experience on the durability of your Cougar? Do they have a weak point?

I had a Beretta 8000 Cougar in 9mm. It was a beautiful gun, Inox finish with walnut grips. Only one problem... the front dovetail sight moves or flies off. I've tried everything, including locktite. I sent it back to Beretta where they installed a new slide but I had the same result. It seems the dovetail on some of the slides was machined slightly too big. Beretta actually took back the gun and sent a refund. They were great to deal with.
That's cool. Especially since some people claim Beretta is hard to work with. My sight hasn't moved, I only shoot that way. ;)

Other than finish wear from holstering, I've not had a problem with my Cougar L and it's seen a lot of use. My Inox Cougar and MiniCougar in .40 S&W have also been perfect but have been used much less. Actually, the Mini did have a failure to feed where the slide didn't fully return to battery but I think it was a limpwristing error. Nudged it with my thumb and everything was good to go.

(Edited to add, I never had problems with sights on any of my Cougars.)

My Cougar has been 100% reliable. Great gun.
I carry mine everyday now. It's 2 1/2 lbs. I think I know now why JOhn Wayne walked the way he did. :)
I have several Cougars, never had problem one with any of them.
It's one of the great classic designs of our generation. It's really a shame where Beretta is going with their handgun designs now. The Cougar is their last great handgun before they jumped the shark.

+1.
I own 2 Cougars(8000F & 8000D Mini) and both have been accurate and reliable pistols.

Greetings Sudden,
Interesting that Cody Jarrett mentioned the front sight. I had my eyes on a blue Cougar a few years back--$450. Fit was great and it looked very nice . . . however . . . when the dealer pulled it out of the blue box, the front sight just FELL OFF. We both freaked when that happened.
Needless to say I did not buy THAT ONE! However, I did buy the OTHER ONE next to it (the front sight did not fall off--) and I have never had a problem with it. Great weapon!:hearts:

I had 1 of the first ones in the 1990s - nice blue steel slide. Worked fine. I just don't shoot sub 4" barrels as well - and with the fullsize grip, it was basically a fullsize gun.
But, never a problem. Ended up selling it.
Yeah. I have a 8040 mini. It's a full size gun with a short barrel and a short grip.;)
I just bought a 8000 in 9mm today. I went to a local shop looking to see what kind of 9's they might have and I even asked about the new Stoeger Cougars. They said they didn't have any and couldn't get them right now. Kept looking and way in the back of a bottom shelf I see a 8000 with a price of $279. I ask and they say "oh, yeah, but that one is a DAO". I like DAO's so I asked for a bottom dollar and got the gun for $259, LNIB with the 2-15 round mags and the manual. I am tickled pink. When I made it home I lubed it up, went out in the back yard and let 50 rounds fly. I like this gun.
Congrats, sounds like a good deal to me.

I have 2 magazines for a Beretta 8000 Cougar in 9mm. If anyone is interested in them please give me a hoot.
They have very little use as I only owned the gun for about 2 months. I'll include a brand new set of stock sights for the Cougar.
Also, I'm willing to trade for two mags for a G17 or any other goodies you might want to get rid of.
I purchased a Cougar in 9mm in September 1999 and it's still running strong. Excellent all around handgun.
