Had the opportunity to wring out the SIG 550 series Commando (10"?)and 14.5" versions recently at a demo. Impressions:
-LOVE the folding stock....a true, sturdy side folder. If only for this reason I wish our PD had SIGs instead of AR's. The entire rifle has a very sturdy, solid feel.
-Excellent trigger. On FA, it was very easy to put out short 2-3 bursts and even single shots.
-Cyclic rate is slower than I prefer, but still within my tastes.
-Nice not to hear that SPROING next to my cheek each time I fired (a la AR15).
-15 or 20rd mag would be nice; helps the compactness w/my AR inside the patrol car. The SIG 30rd mags are well made, although the snap-together has a lot more 'wiggle' than I care for.
-Left-hand sling is tough, at least with the attachment points provided as standard. Wish each point was ambi.
-Zero malfs, even when firing dirty, in odd positions, or unsupported.
All in all a heckuva nice assault rifle. I'd still probably go with semi ARs for most uses in LE, but as a military rifle I think the 550 series is a definite step above.
