View Full Version : Does anyone here have...
..an X47 forend kit from Command Arms Acessories (TDi Arms) on their AK? The reason I ask is that I have one, but it didn't come with any kind of instalation instructions. Dealing with the manufacturer or distributor is like pithing up a rope. I would love to assemble this on my Yugo when I am home on R&R from the sandbox, but I doubt it's really feasable w/o some paperwork to accompany it. If you have it, would you mind scanning me a copy? Any suggestions you may have on this unit would be appreciated also. Thanks!

Fred,
First of all, only shotguns have "forends". Rifles have "handguards"
:tongueout: .
I assume you speak of this set here
http://www.commandarms.com/product.asp?pID=15&cID=44
Here's the "how to":
- make sure weapon is clear etc etc
- remove top cover, recoil spring, bolt carrier with bolt
- remove cleaning rod
- turn gas tube latch ( right side of rear sight block ) upwards and remove gas tube
- look for a little latch at the front right of the lower handguard and turn/pick it up
- slide the lower handguard out and compare to the new one
- compare upper handguard to the one on your tube ( do not take the one off your tube yet )
The reason you should compare these before proceeding is because Yugo-pattern furniture is a bit different, size-wise, than the rest of European-pattern furniture, much more than the Chinese-pattern is. You COULD shim the lower, but the upper you'd have to get a Euro pattern tube which may or may not fit on your Yugo ( that is if you don't want to do any monkeying with $75 handguards ..... I wouldn't ).
If all seems to work well, place rear end of gas tube in a vise, grab handguard and turn gently until it goes upside-down and can be popped off. You do not want a broken upper handguard. Retrieve the little clip from inside the handguard and use it on the new one.
If it doesn't look it'd fit, send it back!
Good luck !
Alright, I'll call it a handguard:thumbsup:. However, negatory on the part. Here's the one:
X47 (http://www.commandarms.com/product.asp?pID=24&cID=17)
A little more complex, to be sure.
I am a little depressed that it may not work on the yugo. What about a WASR-10?

dang. I dont like how it blocks the reciever cover. I'll keep MY ULTIMAK (http://home.comcast.net/~hpacevedo/guns/P1026665.JPG) . But I must admit, the x47 does have a robocop/terminator look to it. sorry about not being of any help to the install.

Fred,
From looking at the pictures, one would follow same given instructions, save the "make sure it fits" part. If this is a modular system, seems like one would take it apart, install upper and lower handguards, then clamp/screw the forward and rear rail platforms ( which appear to be mounting to the handguards rather than the receiver ) back on. It will work on the WASR or any Euro pattern AK; no-go on the Yugo, and it might need some extra work on a Chinese. One might need to take the rear sight leaf out as well.
As "Packin'Heat" observes, blocking the receiver cover might be a problem if the rail platforms are not modular, at least for cleaning. The unit will also need to be taken completely apart and off for a thorough ( beyond "bore snaking" ) cleaning.
You know, that might not be so bad after all. I really like the looks of the Yugo underfolder, and I was afraid I might have to buy another so I would have a "stock" unit on hand. Now, the prospect of tearing into the other doesn't kill me so much. I guess now I need a new rear stock, huh? Maybe an Mforgery adjustable...to keep up with the Joneses...
Thanks for the help, fellers!
Fred
p.s. I like that Vepr! Nice.

At that price, it should certainly have instructions. It really...what's the term...irritates me...boils my blood...pisses me the **** off when d****** manufactures can't put a God **** owners manual with their product. I ordered a couple stocks from ACE Ltd and my only complaint with them is that they didn't have owner's manuals. We are talking about an installation procedure that requires permanent modification of the firearm and they don't even have the common f-ing courtesy to include a manual? I got the stocks installed alright, but I know how you feel.
Call TDI, tell them to hook you up with a manual or installation instructions. It is not too much to ask.
And give a field report when you have that bad boy up and running.

You mean the "just cut the dang tang" internal receiver block? What more did you need to know? :tongueout:

Hey it is kinda intimidating holding a rifle in one hand and a hacksaw in another. It is counter-intuitive to you, or at least it was to me, because it goes against everything I was taught. I got it, but like I said, I was more than just a little put off by the fact that the a******s couldn't even include installation instructions.

I use a dremel with an abrasive cut-off wheel.

An eotech 512, Ultimak gas-tube scout mount, and Ultimak ACR2 forend wasn’t exactly peanuts but then again my vepr was close to 600 out the door.
There’s a funny quote made by Rolls Royce buyers that seems to apply: "it’s reassuringly expensive"
