Anyone here go through boot camp during the summer of 1986 at Orlando RTC?

Hi,

Nope. I was there in 1971. First barracks off the grinder. First ship was USS Neversail.

I volunteered to go to East Coast, West Coast or CONUS. After due deliberation they sent me to Africa for 2 years.

I was there for the Summer of 1974. Fresh from Cleveland, OH, I had never SMELLED the tropical vegetation until then.

Is RTC ORL just a memory now?

I know that RTC SD was closed, as well as the entire NTC SD.

RTC Orlando closed in Dec 96. The Naval Training Center, which RTC was a part of, closed in mid-98 if I recall correctly. There are only a couple of buildings left on the main base portion of the property. They were some of the newest buildings on the base when it closed - the DFAS building, and what was supposed to be a chow hall for SSC. The rest were bull-dozed, and there's homes/condos there now. The hospital was turned over to the VA in '96 or '97.

Only had to drive about 45 min. from my house to get there too. Still serving and still have a great time what I'm doing!!
