View Full Version : P99C full auto burst
Weird thing today at the range with my Walther P99C. Using Blazer aluminum 115gr, my pistol did a 2-shot full-auto burst twice in about 50 rounds.
The trigger reset is very short and that makes it a pleasure to shoot - but I wonder if under muzzle whip I managed to fire twice in a split second? I don't really think so, it sounded odd and the guy at the next bench made a comment to that regard. I kept firing and finished the mag and a couple mags later it did it again. Over 600 rounds since new and this has not happened before...
Any ideas on this? It's pretty freaky when it happens.
Is this something that should go back to S&W post haste, or should I put a bunch more ammo through it and see if it continues or gets more frequent?
It appears it needs fixed you better "Get'r done!" ;)
I'd wait to see if it happens again before calling S&W. More than likely, it was a bump fire caused by a short reset and recoil. I have had it happen with a friends Glock before.

More likely a bump fire.
I've had the same thing happen with two of the P99's I have or do own. For me it is completely user error and I can trace it to switching back and forth between the Glock and Walther trigger. The Glock reset is just a little bit longer and heavier so that my finger doesn't do an automatic double tap. On the Walther I sometimes do some dry firing (sans mag) where I pull the trigger and hold it all the way down then reset the slide by hand. From there the reset is VERY short and after doing this a few times I think I develop some muscle memory. Then at the range my finger wants to do the same thing and the result is an unconscious double tap. Its never happened with my Glocks and I think it is due to the heavier pull of the Glock. I don't like it when this happens because it indicates a lack of control on my part. I've gone back and forth between Glock's and Walther's and this short reset is the one thing that may eventually push me away from a P99.

This is a main reason that I only own and fire one type of pistol. I only own and fire Walther's and all are AS models.
jmoln - that makes sense, the reset is insanely short. I just need to work on my trigger mechanics - I'm pretty sure it was me and not the Walther.
:)
LH - that leads to another question - just what are the proper mechanics for the P99 trigger? Should you hold back until the weapon has dropped and come back on target? Or, should you let go and have your finger and trigger in a forward position after the shot? Whatever I do with my Glock is an unconscious act so I am not sure and it doesn't cause a problem. Whatever I'm doing with my Walther occasionally causes the quick tap so I need to learn the proper technique. Any ideas out there?
I think the proper technique is to 'follow-through' and maintain trigger pressure until you have a sight picture again, then release-reset & squeeze again.
I notice though when I spend much time shooting my Sig with it's loooooooong reset, I get kinda relaxed with the reset, then I switch to my P99 and it takes some adjustment period. Probably not a bad idea to just stick with one trigger brand/system. But I like too many different pistols to do that!
