I have a 302 h.o. with 5 speed out of a '88 mustang stuck in a '81 fairmont. It is stock except for aluminum intake and holley 4 brl. Factory headers with duals, no cats. Electric fuel pump. trying to build a cheap street sleeper. Looking for relatively inexpensive head options to bolt on. Any suggestions? Also, will a 75 shot NOS kit kill it? I have never had, or even been around a Ford before so need a little direction. Thanks.

I'm not up on the latest with heads, but there's a lot of good tech in the forums over at www.corral.net .

As long as the engine isn't on its last leg, a 75 shot should be nothing for it. It's got forged pistons, and maybe the crank but don't hold me to that one :) They handle power adders pretty well. I've seen guys running 150 shots all day with no problem. I've seen a couple crazy bastards run 250 shots on high-mileage stock shortblocks - they explode eventually but they usually get at least one season of hard running out of it.

Try this:

I believe car craft did a similar buildup.

Go to www.turboford.net and do some searches on a guy named Stinkin' Lincoln (not positive on the caps or punctuation). He had a warmed over 302 in a sleeper Fairmont that made something like 325rwhp on 87 octane.

Or try www.turbomustangs.com
My brother has a smallish single turbo on his car and it can't hookup on 10.5" slicks on the street. Imho, its more than fast enough with only 10 lbs of boost.

Yeah, turbo cars are the ****. My buddy's got an '86 Saleen with an '88 40k mile shortblock, ported iron GT40s, Edelbrock Performer intake, and a PTK single non-intercooled T44. Good for 425/530 and 12.60's, and will light street tires up through third.

Turbos are not for everyone. When the boost comes on it goes to your pre-set limit almost immediately. The car feels like its floored when you have applied 1\3 throttle in 2nd gear after the boost comes on.

A good cam can make a world of difference. If you aren't worried about the fuss factor of cracking an older motor, aggressive cam with good heads, and you'll be smokin. 75 shot won't hurt you at all. A friend of mine blows 150 shots on a 302 w/150k on the clock.

You are on the right track.
Intake
Heads
Cam
Headers
Exhaust
Nos

Looks like a winner to me.

Do us a favor to, don't reuse any of the gaskets:thumbsup:

This is my latest project. Best run- 13.2 @101

BTW:

I used the Edelbrock Performer set on my 95 Chevy 350, in a 5000lbs Tahoe. I do reccomend their new headers, the coating looks as good today as a year ago.

Truck runs high 15s, with knobbies.

Decent aftermarket heads will cost more than the rest of the shortblock. They would be a waste of money unless you redid the whole engine. Might as well put a stroker crank kit in it for a 347.

Forget the turbo idea, you would have to convert to efi instead of the 4bbl carb to get it to work worth a darn, and turbos are expensive and anti-sleeper.

If it were mine and I HAD to do it for cheap:
Get the cyl's honed and put new rings on the old pistons.
Put in a reasonable little hydraulic roller cam (bigger isn't better)
complete new gasket set, oil pump and timing chain.

If your engine compartment has the room for a block with a little more deck height, I would forget redoing the 302 and get a 351w block, stroke it to 418 and put some Edelbrock performer RPM heads on it with a small base circle roller cam. Done right this can give you 500+ ft of torque from 2500 rpm up. But now we aren't cheap anymore
