View Full Version : Just how accurate are VEPRs?
I have a chance to pick up a used Super VEPR locally for what I think is a very good price. If I don't grab it now someone else will. Do you think this will approach the accuracy of say a typical bolt action hunting rifle?

IMHO accuracy is 10% equipment and 90% "the nut behind the butt" ..... that being said, a boltie will always have somewhat of an edge over a semiauto.
What would be "a good price" for the Super VEPR, and what do you mean by "typical bolt action hunting rifle" ? If you were to pick up the VEPR for lets say $500, then yes for the money you would beat the "typical" Wally World Bubba-the-hunter Remington 700.

I would want to shoot it before I bought it. If your able to take it out try some good Match grade ammo. Some of these Super Veprs were able to shoot 0.50 from the factory and some weren't, thats why I would test fire it first if you could.
Well I couldn't pass it up. It was part of a old man's collection of over a thousand guns of various kinds being sold off on consignment at a local shop. He never fired any of them, he was a pure collector. Although some of them might have been shot before he bought them, he only bought guns in top notch condition and most were bought brand new. From the looks of the bore I can't tell, after running a bore snake through to get rid of all the dust it is perfect. It was missing a little bluing around the muzzle and had a small light patch of rust forming there but I've already taken care of that. Have no idea how it got that way, the rest of the gun is pristine. Originally the price was $650 when it appeared 3 months or so ago which I thought was a good deal even then, but it came down over time to where I just had to snap it up. It came with only the 5rd hunting mag, but they have 10rd mags available where I bought it also. No way to shoot it first, but I'm headed to the range tomorrow.
Pic. It doesn't do the stock justice. I added the scope.

We'll be interested to see how it shoots. If you want to know how accurate it can be, you'll have to spend some money for some good Match ammo.

Nice rifle at a very nice price. Ammo-wise, you should do OK with Igman or Wolf Gold. Original Soviet LPS is very accurate also, but it's corrosive, so lotsa cleaning.
Well I've done a bit of research and now I know why the muzzle tip was missing some of the finish. It seems that the VEPR finish is baked on laquer, in other words its painted, and solvents like Hoppes #9 will dissolve it.
So I'm taking this to mean its been shot at least a little because at some point it was cleaned. Doesn't matter to me though because after today it will surely not be "unfired" anymore.

You could try some Hornady tap, Black hills Match or the best some Lapua Match. If none of these will bring your groups under sub MOA I would sell the gun. I have 3 KTR's vepr based, in different calibers and they will all achieve sub MOA with good Match Ammo.
