I know that they are advertised at 1250 fps but was wondering if anyone has chronographed any of the new Ranger T's lately and if so what kind of velosity are they getting. I've got 150 rounds of them ordered and I'm considering switching from a G23 to my G17 for duty because of the higher magazine capacity of the G17.
Hello, I am a former LEO and recently bought a G17. I tested that round in mine and it did great in wet phone books, expanded nicely and shot point of aim. It's what I carry now in it.
Just my 2 cents.
T:thumbsup:
Velocity is just FYI info with the T-Series ammo. I love the fact that I can load any round like the 147gr or the standard 230gr into a sub compact gun and the bullet will perform in par as one shot from a full size weapon.

I think this is one of the best factory 9mm loads out there. Just wondering if anyone has chronographed them lately.
Recently chronoed the 127+P+ and 147 rangers from a G19 and a G26. Here are my results:
G19
RA9TA; Avg Vel. 1231 fps-High-1254 fps.
RA9T : Avg Vel. 938 fps High- 953 fps.
G26
RA9TA; Avg Vel 1226 fps -High- 1235 fps.
RA9T : Avg Vel.901 fps - High-918 fps.
As you can see the G26 does about as well velocity wise as the G19. I believe this(127+P+) is the load for the little G26.It's an easy shooter in the G26 also.
I like a 147,in fact I almost demand a 147,to run 990 fps. pretty consistently. The RA9T fell short of my expectations here, but I have not completed the wetpack testing to go along with the chronographing yet.It could be that the on target performance will still be satisfactory. I've seen other's wetpack tests, but prefer to do my own to know what to expect from my own pistolas. They all have their own personalities.
Incidentally the 147 gr. Rem Golden sabre was the fastest 147 from both guns. It ran an average of 1010 fps from the G26 with a high reading of 1028 fps. from the same gun.
I chronoed the loads twice on two separate occasions to obtain the average velocities. Used an Oehler chrono first time and a little shooting Chrony the second time. Velocities were almost identical on both occasions, telling me I was getting true readings.
Hope this is helpful.
Just as an aside here are a couple of other readings I obtained using some other popular loads from these two pistols.
G19; Fed 147gr HST- Avg Vel. 987fps.(very close to what I like),
High reading- 1002 fps.(smokin' along real well).
Rem.124gr.+P bonded; Avg.1157fps-High 1164 fps(very consistent)
Speer Gold Dot 124gr.+P; Avg.1205-High 1210(also very consistent)
G26:
Fed 147gr.HST: Avg.949 High-965
Rem 124+P bonded-Avg.1124 High-1155
It appears that the G26 doesn't lose much with the +P and +P+ loads, just as I have suspected. It also stays pretty close with a couple of the 147's.
If you're shooting a G17 or pistol of like bbl length I believe you can reasonably expect close to 1300 fps from the 127+P+ Ranger, since that's the one you specifically asked about.

yeah, what doch said, about 1280 from a g17.
remember, velocity is not the measure of a rounds effectivness.
in almost all testing, modern 147 gr is superior. ymmv
ra9t 147gr rangerT is THE 9mm load imho.
if you like fast, the 127gr+p+ is almost as good in testing and has the velocity to shoot flat and has more energy if you subscribe to high energy being a good measure of a bullets effectivness. pays ya money and take your pick.

I'm starting to believe the G17 is quite possibly one of the best combat pistols of any caliber period. You've made a wise choice! Although I load mine up with 19+1 rounds of Federal 9BPLE(more accurate in my guns/hands than RA9TA, although not by much)I do inventory RA9TA as well, and would feel just as comfortable defending my life with it. Out of my 17's this load routinely does anywhere between 1275-1280fps, the last time I checked, which was about 3 months ago.

I've got to throw this in, I can't help it. I was over on stoppingpower.net and have just about got into a pissin contest. I said I liked the high capacity of the G17. If you were in a gunfight it would be a comfort having 52 rounds on me. They kinda looked down their nose at me over that. People kill me bashing the 9mm. I guess they wouldn't mind someone puttin a few 9mm's in them. Might make you feel good!! I've only been to that forum a few times and don't like it much. I feel at home here.
9mm with a good bullet design is good as anything out there pistol wise. I carry a G26 with 147gr HST myself.
Thanks for the test numbers Doc

I do know that the Ranger 127s work really well on Armadillo's around here.
I have consistently Chrono'ed 1275-1280 out of several G-17s on the dept. range.

I have the same problem. I've killed 5 in the past 2 months in my backyard.
A little trivia, the velocity of the 127g Ranger +P+ round is a nominal 1280fps,from a G17, the Canadian IVI Mil Spec round is a 116g hardball, very low flash signature, that is 1280fps!! Out of a G17.
These two cartridges shoot to same point of aim, a thought, what would you think of a load of 18 rounds of 127g rounds, but the reload magazine being hardball mil spec, speculating that if it got to that extra magazine coming in to play, a more cover defeating round might be a viable option? Just a thought.

I second that.
Now I can understand shooting Ground Hogs and Prarie Dogs, but what does an Armadillo do thats so bad ?

Up-armored dillos tear up lawns and dig holes which pose the same problems as the above.
On a personal note, they also make a lot of noise at night. I've been shooting them for years around the house, but just can't get rid of them. Oh well, it's fun.
