Thinning out start up

Wife came home with a Toshiba M115-S3094. Only 512 RAM but I'm adding at least another gig (holds 4g). Anyways, this thing is slow. I'm trying to thin out the start up and goolge each program(?) listed. Generally I look at BleepingComputer, pcreviews.co.uk, uniblue and neubar.
Is there a favorite site you use, or just plug along?
Wasn't there a "Black Knight" guy who had a web site to help with this process? He sometimes appeared on a computer TV show.
