View Full Version : Ultimak or side rail for an optic Army of Juan 10-11-2006, 21:54 Which is the preferred method of attaching an optic? If you had an AK with a side rail, would you still get the ultimak? Spydermonkey 10-12-2006, 02:18 I would deffinately get a side rail mounted scope, actually a red dot. DAVE RICHARDS 10-23-2006, 23:40 All I can say is I really like my UltiMak/Tasco ProPoint combo. Co-witnessed by a MoJo peep sight. One of the real weaknesses of the AK is the pitiful rear sight. The red dot and Mojo really improved my accuracy and speed on target. Really cut my group sizes down. And the difference in getting a quick sight picture is night and day. About makes a new animal out of the AK. That and some Winchester soft points makes a very potent pakage. Army of Juan 10-30-2006, 23:32 Well I just picked up the optic shown below, a PK-AS-S. I like it so far but haven't got to take it to the range yet. I need to improve my cheekweld some. The sight sits up and to the left of the receiver, any ideas on how to do this? http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a206/glocksrock/000_0290.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a206/glocksrock/000_0291.jpg Packin' Heat 10-31-2006, 18:37 Ultimak For the win! I'm going to put an Aimpoint on it. Thanks for the pics. jrs93accord 11-01-2006, 18:38 +1 on the UltiMAK. http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/jamesrea_2006/006_6.jpg Here is the Kobra EKP-8-15 (Russian made) on mine. http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/jamesrea_2006/005_5.jpg Army of Juan 11-01-2006, 21:13 Thanks for the pix. I thought about a Kobra to put on there, but am going to go with an Aimpoint on the Ultimak to keep it as low as possible. jrs93accord 11-02-2006, 03:44 Originally posted by Army of Juan Thanks for the pix. It is really simple to install. Just 4 screws and two clamps. Which mount are you going to use for the ML2? If you are wanting to keep the optic low, the Aimpoint may not be the way to go. The reflex type sights are better for the low profile. I found the Kobra to be a good compromise. I am not saying it is the best choice, but it is an excellent option. The Aimpoint may be close in overall height though. I would say if you get the chance to try both before you buy, do it. As for the UltiMAK, you can't go wrong. Army of Juan 11-02-2006, 15:30 I was going to use the mount that Aimpoint sells, it is very low. It will be low enough to use the irons through the Aimpoint. jrs93accord 11-02-2006, 16:13 Sounds good. Packin' Heat 11-02-2006, 17:48 it was a toss up for me between the eotech 512 and the aimpoint comp ML3. I'll prolly end up getting the aimpoint for my next rifle once I figure out what its gonna be. Why not have both right? Plus I like the idea of the 3x magnifier, even though its pretty expensive by itself. Army of Juan 11-04-2006, 13:06 Well I got the Ultimak and put it on the SLR. Moved the PK-AS-S to the VEPR K. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a206/glocksrock/000_0294.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a206/glocksrock/000_0292.jpg jrs93accord 11-04-2006, 13:20 Looks good with the Aimpoint on there. Rusty Shackleford 11-09-2006, 06:46 How is the zero retention with these Ultimak rails? All the vendor descriptions I read about it say it attaches directly to the barrel but it sure looks to me like it goes right on the gas tube, which comes off for your average detail strip/clean. Is this more stable than a reciver cover mounted sight or optic? cynical 11-09-2006, 15:07 Originally posted by Rusty Shackleford How is the zero retention with these Ultimak rails? Is this more stable than a reciver cover mounted sight or optic? Actually, the Ultimak replaces the gas tube. It mounts in place like your current gas tube, plus it has a couple of clamps that wrap around the barrel and are covered by the lower handguard. So you wouldn't be taking it off to clean it normally, just use a shotgun brush or mop. You can take it off if you want, but it would be a pain to do on a regular basis, and you'd be putting a lot of wear and tear on the threads of the clamps. It might also affect your zero. vBulletin® v3.7.3, Copyright ©2000-2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd. | ![]() |
