View Full Version : looking for revolver as house gun
Hello ruger fans,
I am looking for a revolver for a house gun.I don't have any revolers but think it may be better for my wife then a seim-auto.I was thinking of a ruger,gp-100,357 magnum,4"barrel.When I am not home I can loud it with 38 special for my wife and when I shoot it I can use 357.What do all of you think of the ruger,gp-100?Is it IYO better then a s&w,357?Any and all info will be helpfull.
thanks.

The GP series is a fine choice to fill your needs. Bull-strong, heavy enough to keep recoil to a minimum, and unmatched long-term durability. The S&W may have a bit smoother trigger action right out of the box, but it will almost certainly cost more (maybe a LOT more) for the same size gun. You could drop down in size to a K-frame S&W to reduce the size and weight, but then it won't be a durable as the larger frame guns (of either manufacturer).
It GP-100 is, however, a relatively large weapon, and if your wife has smaller hands, be aware that with a combination of the size and weight she might feel the weapon is "too big" (this is a common complaint). Smaller grips can be purchased, but the weight will still be there, of course. This isn't really a problem limited to the Ruger; you may run into it with any similar-sized weapon.
Good luck!
So much depends upon hand size. She should personally try a GP100 and an SP101, both Rugers, of course.

Is the Ruger better than a S&W? No. Is the S&W better than the Ruger? No. Picking out a gun for another person isn't that easy. Your best bet is to take her to a gun store and let her handle the various wheelguns. Better yet, if there's a range in your area that rents guns, that's the way to go. Gun stores are full of used handguns that "felt great" in the store. And what ever you do, don't let some gunstore commando talk you into buying her an Airlite small frame snubby.
Good advice from magsnubby on the Airlites. IMHO, the Airlites should only be used by experienced shooters, who have an all-steel companion piece with which to do most of the practice.
a 4 inch 357 is the perfect house gun.i generliy run 38 special to tone down the flash/bang indoors.i use ether my colt ds or my smith & wesson model 19-3 in 2 and 4 inches respectivly!my gp 100 is 6 inches a bit long for a house gun imho.
I think the GP100's are too big and heavy for a CQC weapon for a woman, in most cases. Either a S&W K-frame or a 3" SP101 would be a better choice, but with the SP101, you only get five shots rather than six and the trigger is not nearly as nice.

Get one with a four inch barrel and you'll have an excellent choice.

The 4" .357 is just about the best all around handgun. I've got two GP100s, one is a 6" the other is a 4", and I love both of them. I highly recommend Hogue monogrips for the GP100. It reduces the grip size and makes the gun feel better (in my hands anyway). You can't go wrong with a GP100.

I agree. I don't remember it being as 'bulky' as the GP100 when I handled them both at a local shop. It might be better for your intended purpose. Just as durable and strong too.

The GP-100 will always be my favorite handgun, partly because its such a great gun and partly because it was the first handgun I ever bought, but the SP-101 seems like a good gun too.
I don't know if Ruger puts as stiff a trigger on the SP-101 as they do the GP-100, but if they do, I would recommend getting a spring kit from Wolf Springs. For $10 you can get a set of springs and install them yourself (just be careful that none of the little springs fly out when you take the gun apart, trust me they are hard to find on carpet ;) ). Makes the gun a whole lot better to shoot without the super stiff Ruger factory trigger.
I have a 3 inch GP100 and for me ,it has been a great gun like my SP1012.25 inch barrel and my G17,19,31,and 30. I love my rugers more and also my Pseries 345 in .45 cal. I havent had any type of mag trouble since I have had it[345]. it has been a nice firearm to shoot with no malfunctiopns or ftes. Rich Ziemies,Omaha,Ne.
