These are (relatively) inexpensive....is this a case of you get what you pay for, or are they decently reliable?
If I searched for a while, what would one expect to pay for a VG Thompson ?
Keep them clean, and you'll have few problems. They are not suitable as a military weapon with small parts that can be easily lost in the woods while disassembling.
As a recreational or civilian weapon, they are easy to shoot well, accurate, and fun.
Magazines are relatively expensive, but the Ken Christie 30rd mags are available and reliable.
The cheapest Thompson will set you back over $10K.
Other .45 subguns which are a relative bargain are the Ingram M6 at ~$6,000, and the Spitfire which is a weird cross of the Thompson and greasegun at ~$4,000.

Since you list Minnesota you are going to need to fine a C+R original gun, this will include original Tommy guns 30k or a West Hurly M1 which will run around 11k.
A Reising will set you back $4500-$7000 depending upon model and condition.
The Ingram Model 6 is also a C&R. Go visit Subguns.com and ask if anyone in MN has a REising or Ingram Model 6 that you could rent or test-fire.

The only problem with the Ingram M6 is the magazines are difficult to find, and expensive when you do.
Reising mags are $80 or so for the 30-round Christies, and about the same for original 20-rounders. I'm pretty happy with my Reising. As 1gewehr noted, they need to be kept cleaner than some other guns.
