I was thinking about getting a light for my 590 the other day but I dont want it on the foregrip and this idea hit me.Why not make a flash light that attaches using the bayonet lug for a 590,its not like anyone ever puts a bayonet on it why not manufacture a flash light to fit over it ?
Is there anything out like that already ?
Is there a reason that wouldnt work ?

That actually would be a good idea. Of course since it is a good idea no one has done it yet. Maybe look for mounting ideas for M16s.

Only problem is you'd be stuck with using one of those funky remote pressure switches on a flexy wire, or an ackward push of the tail cap....which wouldent be possible when cycling.

Yeah I kinda thought of that. After thinking about it I tought about how close your hand on the front grip is to the bayonet mount.A switch much like the glock factory light would work well it could be activted just by sliding your hand slightly forward, extending your index finger and fliping it on.

The biggest problem with lighting a shotgun is that the Surefire forends are the *****. Any other solution is funky, ackward, and mickey mouse. The rub comes in because they want a freeking fortune a 10 dollar plastic foreend with a light stuffed into it. I've just resigned myself to not having a light till I can buy a surefire and fret about the cost for what I'm getting.

The bayonet idea just might work. I agree that Surefire is too expensive...good, but too expensive.
I took a picatinny type mount from an old AR mount, bought another forearm, attached the mount to the forearm and now I can mount my M3 light to the forearm.
I mounted the rail to the side instead of the bottom. One thing I don't like about the Surefire is that it sits right behind the sling and the sling blocks some of the light.

anything wrong with what I've got?

I used:
1) Lite Mount Technologies - mine is only for a light. the below pict is for both light and laser.

2) Surefire G2. I am thinking I am gonna move up to a LED lamp.
3) remote tail cap.

PH, I've seen those and wondered how they would work. That looks good.

PH,does the wire get in the way when you cycle the gun ?
That would be my only objection.
In the idea I decribed the switch would be on the back of the light and would flip on and off.So you dont have anything attached to the foregrip or loose wires to snag on things.I guess I am just being picky.

well they are two types of pressure switches, the coiled kinds and the straight-wire ones. Obviously I went with the coil so it will move with the forearm. it definitely doesn't get snagged or pinched or otherwise molested by any action or movement. Every time I add somethign on, I go to the range to see if I can make it fail. its been a perfect for me. so take from that what you will, but I sleep easy with that system.
a couple more things:
1) like I said, the one I have pictured is for both a laser and a flashlight. they make just flashlight mounts.
2) its a VERY tight fit (as far as distance between mount and the forend at rest) on the 18.5" mossberg 590. but it works.
3) I have a hogue forend, so its made with their rubber material. The pressure switch comes with cheapy Velcro. the Velcro adhesive will NOT adhere to the rubber. I went with a stronger rubber adhesive.
4) The surefire G2 nitrolon body is LARGER when 1". so it doesn't fit inside the 1" mount. Luckily the tailcap is, so thats how its mounted. I prolly could thin down the G2 to the 1" diameter, but haven't gotten around to it.
Ever since i moved to the world of highpower LEDs, the G2 cant keep up. so now I am in the market for a 3 or 5watt LED flashlight what has a 1" body and accepts the pressure switch. That and the funds to buy said flashlight.....:crying:

I purchased a Surefire X200 for this reason.... It will mount to the Picatinny rail on my forearm.

I took the forend off of my 590 and mounted a rail to the starboard side.
No need for cords or crap.
I can manipulate the on-off switch with my thumb.
I use a good set of low profile 1"weaver rings.
This will fit Surefire, Brinkmann, Scorpion, etc...
I suspect that you could get a gunsmith to do the same for you for $20-$50 if you dont have the ability to do it yourself.
I used a rifle scope rail that was on clearance somewhere for $1.99
I made sure it fit the contour of my forend first, cut it to size, and parked it.
Very easy to do.

That sounds interesting. Can you post a picture?

I will see if I can do that tomorrow.
(I never thought to take a picture of it, so I will have to do that first.)
