View Full Version : S&W PPK vs. older models? TRYE 10-20-2006, 17:15 What changes did S&W do to the original design? How do they compare? Thanks! michael t 10-20-2006, 23:47 The larger tang suppose to prevent slide bite (only a few suffer from this) Now people complain about tang pokeing them. Lasor printing . Looks terrible and rough. On other Walther boards I see people complaining about trigger pins walking out Triggers that won't reset and other problems. Sort of reminds me of reading Kel Tec boards couple years ago. Failer to feed and eject. Iam sorry S&W seems to have little or no Quality Control and are destroying a fine pistol. I have old interarms and they have not been a problem of any kind. I look at every new PPK or PPK/S that comes in to gunshop I go to and yet to find one I would take home for the 480 + tax he gets. I buy the Interarms he gets now and then on trade for 350 and they so far all work and are a better finished gun. I say buy at your own risk & might do a Kel Tec Fluff and Buff. Nice thing about the new ones If you remove slide you can shave with the sharp edges. So in a SD situation you have a rasor when you run out of ammo or it breaks or jams . Wonder when S&W going to put their dumb lock on it. You buy S&W I'll buy older Interarme . German are to much money and mainly for collecting now. TRYE 10-21-2006, 08:13 I have a stainlesss ppk from Walther USA, Springfield. I picked it up right after the demise of interarms, (who's last quality was suspect) about 10 years ago. It has been a safe queen. What is your opinion of the first productions from S&W? Thanks. denfoote 10-21-2006, 15:02 Originally posted by TRYE I have a stainlesss ppk from Walther USA, Springfield. My blued PPK/S (I don't think they make these any more) has been pretty good, with one caveat: S&W DID do some tweeking with the magazines. I'm not sure what they did, I never took out a micrometer and checked. But aftermarket mags DO NOT function in the pistol!! I learned this after I received four Mec-Gar mags!! They simply refused to function in the gun!! As long as I use Smith made "Walther " mags, the gun works!! The gun is rollmarked "Walther USA LLC". In fact, I do carry this rather frequently and am going to take it to the range later on today!! I've never been bitten!! Skates94 10-27-2006, 16:15 I just purchased my first S&W/Walther PPK/S .380 as something to carry with me at all times. On duty I carry a Glock 23 and I used to have a Glock 26 for off duty carry.... but I wanted something with a safety for carry inside the pants. Immediately after purchasing the gun ($465+Tax) I put 100 rounds of American Eagle rounds through it. I have 2 complaints and they are as follows: 1) 1 Failure to Feed every magazine for about the first 40-50 rounds. (I believe this problem may have been caused by my grip) 2) I did not experience slide bite but the back strap did tear up a little webbing on my hand Other than the 2 issues above I love this gun..... It broke down and cleaned up perfect The size is just right An above all...... my shots were dead on accurate I feel comfortable with this as my everyday carry..... as far as the rough lettering some compain about.... as long as mine goes bang when I need it that's all that matters. I'm waiting on a Galco inside the pants holster that I ordered and I'm all set spober 10-27-2006, 21:45 MY MID-LATE 90S PPK/S in 32 acp has been a very reliable gun to me.it was slow to run hp ammo.had to break in period but after that no ammo issues and ive shot the pi*& out of that thing! trick pony 11-24-2006, 11:26 Walther ppk's and ppks's are my favorate no doubt. I have a walther usa marked one and an interarms. Both have been great. They are great shooters, reliable and real easy to carry. As far as the smith and wesson ones go, i dont yet have one, but ive shot a couple and they seemed good to me. They dont jam, and the tang doesnt bother me either way. Im just glad they are being made and are easy to get again! Ill pick up an S and W one when a good deal shows its head. Im not really a collector of them, but i carry one everyday and honestly just really like them. FWIW, i like to carry IWB when i can and the best holsters i have found are the galco royal guard, and the rocket man lowrider IWB. lwt210 11-26-2006, 19:01 I had an Interarms PPK/S that I had reliability issues with. To be fair to it, I didn't give it a break in period and traded it off for something else. I have a S&W model PPK now and have had about 500 rounds of varous manufacture through it without a single stoppage. It is my current backup weapon on duty. It rides in my weak side front pocket. I prefer the size of the PPK to the PPK/S. It's a booger finding grips for a PPK though. They wrap around and are hard to find. I finally found a company that stocked Hogue checkered Kingwood but they were pricey. Accuracy is pretty good for a pistol of this size. I can print nice, tight groups to 15 yards. I mainly shoot it with the off hand though up close and fast to practice what it is for. My BUG. I have noticed that the trigger pin is somewhat loose but it hasn't "walked out" during shooting or cleaning. I keep an eye on it. I had to relieve an edge on that new tang to keep the blood from flowing after long shooting sessions. Took a ceramic sharpening stone and eased it round. Fixed the problem. Mine is stainless so all I had to do to was to polish it a little after easing that edge. Good little pistol. vBulletin® v3.7.3, Copyright ©2000-2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd. | ![]() |
