View Full Version : OK, what doesn't your Makarov shoot well?
Man, this forum is dead!
Maks drying up.....ammo hard to get.
Too bad.....the Makarov deserves better.
Anyway, I was just wondering if anybody out there has had issues with any kind of Makarov ammo. I have not. This Bulgarian Makarov is just amazing!....eats anything.

JHPs have been a problem from time to time, especially the older RAM which had a very wide mouth.
Have had more FTF problems with WEolf than any other.
Had problems with 115/120 gr ammo.
Basically, I stick with 95 gr FMJ.

Yeah, the forum is drying up and guys like me are at fault - I post replies but don't start new threads. I'll have to work on that.
I have a 1985 Bulgarian that I do most of my shooting with. My 2 EGs and 3 other Bulgies don't get out much - 2 of those Bulgies have never been shot. They came drenched in cosmoline and I've left them alone.
Anyway, when I first started shooting that '85 it would not even feed Sellier & Bellot FMJ consistently. Instead of carving and polishing the feed ramp like I did with some others I've since sold, I just kept ramming ammo through it. Within ~300 rounds it started to feed anything. Now, 1,500 rounds later, nothing stops it.
There are posts from owners who have trouble with JHPs, and also posts from people who have had trouble with FMJs. I think that once the gun is broken in, either by shooting or by work on the feed ramp, they are extremely reliable, even with wide-mouth, lengthy JHPs. Issues with magazines are a different story.
So far, mine eats everything I feed it, including the LVE/Silver Bear 115gr JHP.
My Bulgy has always fed 95gr FMJ no problem, but it didn't like some JHP, Silver Bear in particular, until I softened up that edge on the feedramp. Now it feeds everything.

I've had occasional problems with the Silver Bear 115g JHP. Stuck-in-the-magazine problem, mostly. Every other commercial round I've tried has worked 100% in my EG, PM and Bulgarian Maks, all with 21# springs. That includes the 115g JHP Brown Bear - wish I could find some more of THAT stuff. (I've not tried any of the 120g JHPs.)
All of my "normal" power handloads have worked 100% as well, using lead, FMJ and Hornady JHP bullets. I have been able to induce failure to cycle with handloads, but only when searching out the lowest power load that would still cycle the slide. In the course of that search I naturally made up some loads that wouldn't cycle. But I did find a load that works 100% and is soft enough that the ejected cases fall just about on the top of my shoe. (Velocity of a 95g bullet is only about 650fps.) I can shoot those all day with no pain, and they're pretty accurate too.
had problems with silver bear 115 until i set the bullets into the case deeper to account for too long length for the magazine - used a wolf 95 [i think] for a sample to set up die - works fine now

My IJ-70 doesn't much like Blazer Aluminum (FTE every 50 rounds or so). I've had much better success with the Mesko that AIM was selling a couple months ago...

HPs of all kinds will fail to feed occasionally, not a big deal if shooting at the range but I will not carry HP ammo in this gun.
I have also had the conical shaped Wolf ammo fail to completely chamber leaving the slide out of battery.
Anything FMJ works great, Im particular to the 95gr Sellier and Belliot ammo.
I know I could smooth out the feedramp and most likely be good to go but I dont have any issued carrying FMJ ammo so I dont bother.
