Two weeks ago I took Insights Training's Intensive Handgun course, putting 2000 round thru my G30 in 3 days (all CCI aluminum, BTW). It came thru in great fashion, but it was clearly a handful compared to the 9mm's in the class with minimal muzzle lift. Our instructor mentioned that modern compensators are quite good, and we should get serious about them if IPSC floats our boat. I'm a defensive handgun guy, so I usually ignore IPSC stuff, but I decided to try a KKM Stainless barrel and Compensator on the G30.
Incredible -- virually no muzzle lift! The RO for our Tuesday night defensive shoot shot next to me in the Insights class and he was shocked to see my G30 just laying there, shot after shot. I should have have done this years ago!
The KKM barrel, BTW was a drop-in, but much less play than the factory barrel -- as good as a hand fitting. My Comp came missing setcrews, or I ordered up some nylon-patch 8-32x1/4" SS setscrews from McMaster-Carr, then applied green (wicking) loctite to the comp from the back side, muzzle down, and wiping off the excess after a minute. No tendency to loosen so far.
The KKM Comp is the same width as the G30 slide, so all I needed to do with my kydex holsters that constrict past the muzzle is apply a heat gun while slowly pushing in the G30 with Comp -- the muzzle opening pushes out to the new contour as soon as the kydex softens. Barrel OD is nicely polished, and there seems to be zero play when in battery. The feedramp was also nicely polished, and I've had no feeding issues so far.
The best part is the front sight stayed clean -- normally muzzle blast from a G30 will coat the front sight with power residue within 50 shots, and with some brands the residue is cardboard-colored so you loose the sights on cardboard targets! The Comp ports seem to direct the power gasses straight away from the slide, so there is very little residue anywhere. The Comp adds about a 1/4" of barrel length ahead of the compensation slots, which if anything adds velocity, rather than the loss from simple porting.
