we are having trouble with our teams Benelli shotgun cycling reliably. It is a semi-auto and it cycles reliably with slugs, but the buchshot doesn't. we use the Federal Tactical buckshot which is suppose to have less recoil. I think that is the problem.
Has anyone else had this with low recoil buckshot?
Is there anything we can do?
Low recoil loads are for pumps. The semis already cut the recoil down and they are generally setup for full power stuff.
Basically try out some full power buckshot and see if that helps. I know Hornady made some TAP that said "for semi autos" on the box. I shot some through my S12 and they cycled and functioned great. They are pricey though.

What he said. Benelli semiautos except the M4/M1014 are recoil operated and not enough "thump" means no cycling.
this is the reason the gov't specified gas operation for the M4 Super 90/M1014, as it'll shoot nearly anything, and adding accessories (night vision, etc) won't change the reliability.

there are people there who know M1s/M2s etc. like nobody's
business. Some are a little hard on newbies so be warned.

M4/M1014 are one of the most reliable combat shotgun on the market. They chew through and spit out all kind of loads reliably.

Do you have a sidesaddle on it? If so, check that it hasn't been overtightened flexing the reciever.
What all do you have hanging on this shotgun? Because the M1 is recoil operated, hanging alot of extra weight on the gun changes the dynamics of operation.

We don't have anything on the shotgun.

How many rounds do you have through it?

No clue about that. It would be a very high round count. I had this same problem with a new model. I still think its the low recoil rounds. Slugs work fine 100% of the time.
The Tactical's come with the heaviest of the three recoil springs. You can replace with the reduced power recoil springs, or use more powerful ammo. New springs can be purchased from Brownell's.
run std loads thru first and see if it's just the tactical fed loads thats giving your problems. I use remngton express and estate swat loads just fine with mine.

If it has enough rounds through it to be fully broken in, then like SGT said, changing ammo or recoil springs is your answer.
Is this a new development? If so, is it possible that the reciever could have taken a blow? I believe the reciever on the benelli is aluminum.

Is it an M3 with a pump option?

It is semi-auto only!

Full power 00 buck, then.
The reduced recoil loads are the problem. I had the same problem with my M1 Super 90 Practical when experiment with bird shot loads for 3-gun.
The Bennellis are recoil operated and require a full power load to cycle properly. I tried experimenting with reduced power recoil springs but gave up.

My dept. is going to send the guns back to Beretta (I was told Beretta bought Benelli). If that is the problem they will recommend the proper round that will cycle the weapon.
Thanks for your input guys.

Please keep us updated.
TLHelmer,
Benny Hill (he competes) at http://www.triangleshootingsports.com/ is very good with Benelli sg's and knows how to make them work with reduced loads.
