View Full Version : argh. rusty trijicons. pic.
I carry my G19 IWB almost daily, and daily I have to scrub rust off the rear sight (Trijicon Novak-style).
I've never had this problem with any other of my CCWs, and I'm surprised that a hard-use product like the Triji would rust so easily, especially considering that they're 2006-made, and have only been on the gun a few months. The sights work fine, but it's aggravating as hell, and I don't want the rust to spread into the vial pockets, or transfer to the slide.
Anyone else have this problem, or dealt with Trijicon's customer service dept?
This photo was taken after an hour of carry. I'm not a particularly sweaty individual, and my holster shields the slide from being against my skin. I understand that rust happens, but this seems a bit extreme...

I've never seen Novak style Trijicons.
Is this a Trijicon manufactured sight or did Trijicon sub-contract the tritium lamps in them?
My guess is Trijicon will warranty the tritium lamps, and someone else manufactured the steel sight and that is who would warranty the rust issue.
Where did you buy them?
*edit* I just checked Trijicons web site and they do manufacture Novak style sights (learn something everyday), call 'em up they have great customer service.
Damn! You must sweat sulfuric acid, or swim in the ocean while CCW'ing! Only 1 hour?
Checked all my pistols & revolvers, including the ones that get carried a lot. On some of them, the sights have been rubbed bare, but no rust on any of them. Have a G19 with Trijicons, and the left side of the rear (and the front, of the front) has been rubbed clean, but again, no rust.
Perhaps a change of diet? Maybe your holster is damp (is it leather?) Don't think Trijicon can help; if they replace it, sounds like the new one will rust too.
PS: Just checked my stock Glock tritium sights with a magnet, they're steel. But on my Ameriglo "smooth operators" (they're novak-style) the rear sight is aluminum. Maybe that'll work.
An easy way to prevent rust is wax them! use a good Carnauba wax ..it works!
Cottom ball with WD-40 3 times week...then take 2 asprin on a full stomach...;)
Thanks for the replies. Ya may be on to something with the sulphuric acid-sweat...lol.
I've WD-40'd, oiled, and waxed the sights, to no avail. And yes that photo was taken this evening after approx 1 hour of IWB carry, with the sight being "clean" when the gun went into the holster. Holster is kydex.
My previous CCW, a Kahr K9 Elite 03, never had any rust on the night sights. Perhaps it's simply a finish issue on this particular sight.
I'll see what Trijicon has to say.
Do they rust up when you're not carrying?

Yeah, please find out and let us know. I'm waiting on a Glock order with Trijicons. I don't want to regret it.

Never seen one? Are you serious?
Just about every site that lists Triji's has the 'Novak' style sight. I used to have them on a 17.
I've also seen Trijicons rust on the dovetail. My guess would also be bad finish on that particular set. Good luck on getting it fixed.

I have novak style trijicons on my G23 and have never had any problems with them even sweating like crazy here in Texas. When I first recieved my sites the screw on the front site was bad and trijicon replaced it free of charge immediately. Their customer service was excellent and I am sure if you called them they would make it right. Good luck.

I would contact them. I think yours may have an issue with the protective finish on it. They should not rust in 1 hour. Maybe after years of carry and the finish is worn off and you swim in the ocean. Call them up they have good customer service. I bet a photo sent to them would be a good thing and I would expect they would replace them free of charge. Let us know what happens.

no carry, no rust. I'll call them today & post my findings.
update: just got off the phone with Trijicon; spoke with a gentleman named Mark, who said it's definitely not normal. He issued me a return authorization number, and said they'll most likely either repair (re-finish) or replace the sights.
+1 so far.
update:
Trijicon exchanged the rear sight for a new one, and replaced the tritium vial in the front sight (don't know why...front sight was practically new & working great). Got them back today, 11/17. Big +1 for Trijicon.
Now I don't need these sights anymore, because in the meantime I installed a different set of Trijicons on that Glock...so the Novaks are up for sale in the equipment exchange (for well under MSRP).
