Are airbags supposed to deploy when your car is rear ended???

I was in a car accident two days ago and my airbags didn't deploy. It was a bad accident myself and my wife are okay but here is what the car looks like

I was just thinking to myself that .. hey why didn't the airbags go off..

In most vehicles, the airbags are only deployed on frontal impacts. I've seen many rollovers and rearending where the bags did not deploy. Only because the front end was never hit!

Now if you had a car with side curtain air bags, the bags may or may not have deployed. I'm not to familiar with side bags but I would have to assume it would take a side impact or maybe a frontal impact to deploy the bags.

Be glad your airbags didn't go off.

Airbag deployment is based on deceleration rate. If you are rear ended you would be propelled forward (accelerating). Therefore the bags would not deploy.

+1

I had mine go out in my F150 and it was like getting punched in the face. The accident was bad enough to toal my truck but my safety belt was more than adequate to keep my rear in the seat.
