View Full Version : 45colt and 2400 powder loads
For fun I finished doing some testing this morning and had some leftover powder that was sitting around. Bullets used where 310grain Keith-style from Mt.baldy
temps 80 degs
primer 300CCI
19.0grains of #2400
brass = winchester
gun = 7.5" bbl Ruger Blackhawk
readings take 10ft from muzzle
1shot 1230 fps
2shot 1234 fps
3shot 1245 fps
4shot 1229 fps
5shot 1238 fps
6shot 1231 fps
7shot 1235 fps
8shot 1245 fps
9shot 1250 fps
avg 1237fps 1054fpe
This above load is not to hard to manage in a scope heavy ruger handgun and flew pretty accurate for the 310grain bullet used. It should very good for any four legged medium-large creature in the 48states
For fun I builded some lite easy going loads in which all fairness should work fine for deer/lope sized animals and maybe even elk but yet the load is struggle to stay above 850fps.
temps 80 degs
primer WLP
9.0grains 800X
brass = winchester
gun = 7.5" bbl Ruger Blackhawk
readings take 10ft from muzzle
1shot 870 fps
2shot 880 fps
3shot 889 fps
4shot 889 fps
5shot 878 fps
6shot 883 fps
avg 881 534 fpe
The same bullet was used and with this powder ( 800X ) you get a very lite recoil load in a heavy ruger revolver. A 310grain bullet at over 800fps should cleanly go thru a deer. This load also provides the least in blast/flash and was just about 100% clean burning.

By golly Noway, i am so proud of ya i can't stand it !
I love seeing you play with the 2400....
That 19.0grs 2400 load data you gave, will kill Elk dead as a hammer, i can promise you that. Like i told ya one day, at 100yds, out of my 45LC Ruger BH, at 1200fps, a 300gr cast bullet at 21BHN, will smash the shoulder on elk, and go through, and smash the other one, and (usually) not recovered.. One dead Elk! ;)
Although i 'mostly use H110', for 'the Elk and bigger', these figures YOU show above from the 2400 powder, (as you know, my favorite), will kill elk with that 310gr. Works great with 275/300gr, at 1200fps.
Good data, glad your out blasting away with the 2400. ;)
Good hunting my friend.
stay safe.

You know me and 2400, can't find it locally to save my ass. Now that basspro got rid of all my favorite powders I have to either order online or use other means/sources. I still have about 6 jars of lil'gun stocked pile and that will be my powder to use up before I get anything else.
I used that bottle up ( alliant 2400) in the photo just last week in building those loads and some other ones with 22.5grain and the sierra250 JFP bullet for the 44magnum. Other than I ran out of gas for the generator that was powering the chrono, I would have shot a few of these and gather some numbers and posted them.
This SBH-hunter has really started to show some good numbers. I also found out that it's seems tobe slightly faster than the Redhawk, but I'm still ruling out some other issues. And if you recall I did open the throats up on that cylinder also.

You are certainly on the trail my friend!
It would not surprise me in the least, if the "Hunter" gives better vel. than does the RH. Interesting.. Let me know.
If i can ever help ya with the 2400, i have endless sorces, and can get it all day in San Angelo, 50 miles from the ranch. Let me know if i can help ya in that way.
I loaded a bunch of loads up the other day, and got some more to do tonight. But still got plenty 2400 left, and H110.
BTW, FWIW..... You, and any of these old boys on here that like shooting 'cast', ought to try out the 'Ruckers 250 RNFP', with a small flat meplat. I have been using them to drive nails, (so to speak). 500 ct. for about 22.00/24.00. Get them from s.w. ammo in Mesquite, Tx. Phone #, 972-285-3644. I tell ya this is good (medium/hard) lead for playin around, and for deer as well.
I have had NO fouling problems that concern me, and they have, (for me), been VERY accurate. I get them now just to shoot up as fast as i can. I 'won't' replace my 'serious' CP 300gr'ers with them, but for goofin around, and plinking, and as i said, even deer, i highly recommend them. I told WIG19 about them, and i think he is going to grab a box full.
Gotta run right quick.
Keep it up.. Man the 45LC is one addictive sucker ain't it?

I'm blessed with a brick & mortar shop that keeps just about everything stocked in their powder locker including, of course, things like 2400, H110, Li'l Gun and so on. :hearts:
Not gonna hijack your thread with some neat target pics using H110; best left for another time but if H110 didn't exist or I ran out, I've still got a load that will shoot to 4-1/2 - 5" at 50yds and will drill deer just fine - 18.5gr of 2400 with the HS 275gr WFN or the CP 300gr LFN - in real cold weather it's still doing ~1040 and is pleasant to shoot. Love that powder.
And is the 45LC addictive? Heck, I've got a load with a 265gr Keith that I may take bunny hunting just because it's more accurate than my Ruger Sgl Six - used CanyonMan's poofy load philosophy on that one and that's the box that gets packed with ol' Blue now.
Keep 'er up & keep those reports coming!
DON'T FORGET TO VOTE TOMORROW!

CanyonMan Wisdom beyond your years, my friend.

I'm blessed that I don't have to use just one powder for everything, although I could now. I've found it's kinda like tuning a rifle (although the changes are more dramatic). There's a velocity on the low end that tends to work, and one on the upper end where big charges & hard bullets driven fast tend to come into their own, noticeable by group size shrinkage. Plotted it looks like a bell curve; in the field it spells meat. That big Keith bullet noway's got there looks like it would be a packing-gun load to take anywhere!
As all my grand-daughters are carnivores too I'd better get back to work so I can get outta here & hunt. Hope to be posting some pics of the upcoming deer season which starts in 11 days, during which I'll be largely 'off-the-grid' as the kids like to say nowadays.
:patriot:
p.s. Meanwhile, also have to go vote so we can send our current Gov. Saddlehead packing.
Thanks for posting the Data noway. Good stuff.
Hmmm, Elk vs. the 45 Colt...
Now that would be a good goal to accomplish in this lifetime.
I just returned from Elk hunting (with my 45-70) and though I didn't "catch" any, I saw several and had one of the best hunting adventures I've ever had. I can't wait for next year! Might have to work up an Elk Load for the 45 Colt Blackhawk.
