I started shooting IPSC this summer. At the match this weekend I got a DQ. Broke the 180. I kept looking at this series of targets thinking "You can get them all from one position, why is everyone moving around so much?" Well its so they wouldn't break the 180!
Last target of the last stage of the day, and I'd been shooting well to that point.

Sorry to hear of your DQ. It happens to the best of them. Was you able to walk through the stage beforehand?

Had plenty of time to walk it and plan things out. Just didn't factor in the 180 rule. Won't forget that again!!
I'm just frustrated that a stupid mistake negates an otherwise good day of shooting. Now I've got a month to stew over it before the next match.
Brother you are not alone. It happens, you know what you did and better yet you understand why you were sent home. Been there myself - It sucks to be DQ it also sucks being the one making the call. Next month is another match - Smooth is fast...

Take it all in stride.

Thanks for the encouragement. I think I'm going to back up a bit, stop pushing the speed, and focus on some fundamentals before the next match. No more errors!

Good luck.
Hey, it happens; watch out next time.
I know w/ IPSC sometimes you want to keep your strategies private and show it off when its your turn to shoot. However, there are adventages in discussing them especially w/ experienced shooters.
If DQ, its probably best to happen at where you were at (i.e. last target of last stage). Hopefully, you'll be able to see your scores for the other stages.

It happens to the best of shooters. I had to DQ two guys at a match recently and really did not want to do it, but both tried to make a complete 360 to the right, which meant the guns were coming right at me.

Keep your chin up. I am really starting to get a kick out of IDPA myself. Just shot a classifier again the other day and I am only 10 seconds away from Expert. So I have some work to do. I usually watch teh master class shooters on how they do a stage and then try to emmulate them.

I'm surprised the SO didn't give a warning during the walkthrough, if targets were positioned in a way that might tempt someone to break the rule.
Regardless, it's of course up to the shooter to make sure they don't break it. Please don't think my above statement was arguing that you shouldn't have been DQ'd.

There is an old saying among USPSA/IPSC shooter that there are two kinds of shooters: those who have DQ'd and those who will some day. If you shoot long enough, it will happen to you for some reason, perhaps out of your control. Learning from it and avoiding the same mistakes in the future are the key.
I went for over ten years without a DQ and I believed I would never DQ. Then I took a hard fall in the 2005 Indiana Section Match when I tripped over a fault line that I didn't see. I had to choose between dropping my gun and allowing my man-pretty face to meet the gravel. I chose to drop the gun, but I did so in a manner that it was always pointed at the backstop. It was a DQ, but the pain and blood didn't make that seem like such a big deal at the time .

It was a stage with a range of targets that required several different shooting positions. They were kind of arranged in a half circle. I just got to one point and kept shooting around the circle. The last one was only a few degrees past 180. I don't recall if the RO gave a 180 reminder at the walkthrough, but its certainly discussed at the beginning if every match.
I'd taken two first timers to the previous match and I'd reminded them of the 180 rule before every stage, so I certainly knew the rule. I just got caught up in the strategy and didn't factor that in - it was all my fault, I certainly don't blame anyone else. LIke I said, it won't be doing that again!!
Thanks for the encouragement everyone. Looking forward to getting back to it.

I got one, shooting in an alley w/tgts on both sides. Got going too fast and over ran a tgt. Turned to get it and went home for the day. Didn't break 180* by much and no danger to anyone but learned a good lesson.

Im sure ill be getting a DQ this weekend when I shoot Single Stack for the first time with a brand new 1911 that I have never shot. I've actually never shot a 1911 so it should be interesting!
Dont worry about it, lots do it.

If I had a nickel for every time I've heard this... Very true, though. I've DQ'd twice now. Once for dropping my firearm during a reload and the last one was making up a target I over-ran. That time I stopped myself, unloaded and stowed the mag, then showed clear to the r.o. and told him "I 180'd" before he even called it. He was going to call it, and it was blatant, I just beat him to it. Think I kinda threw him off when I stopped myself and cleared.
Look at it this way, you went ahead and got it out of your system so just chalk it up to expierence and keep shooting.

Whats that saying?
You learn from your mistakes.
No worries, just keep shooting and have fun. (while being safe of course.)
Yup, just waiting on the DQ myself... it's out there...
We had a guy who DQ'd for finger on trigger while moving... It was great to see and experience the "re-training"... he would be moving through the course shooting, then running to the next "position" yelling FINGER FINGER FINGER....
Most amusing...
but he hasn't DQ'd since! Do what Ya Gotta Do!

Jed,
Don't sweat it. In 17 & 1/2 years I've been DQ'ed 4 times. We're like race car drivers. If you keep running the same circle, you're gonna hit the wall every now and then...
Stay safe and keep your head in the game.
