In this month's issue of SWAT magazine their is an article on Germany's GSG-9 unit. There chosen sidearm is the Glock17! Nice choice of a pistol for a Spec Op unit that could have any weapon they choose. I was really suprised that they weren't using a SIG!
Over the years they have used everything from the HK P9S, HK P7, different SIGs, even the Walther P1, and S&W snubbies.

The US Army's AWG (Asymmetric Warfare Group) uses G19s. ;)
AWG Mission Statement - The Asymmetric Warfare Group (AWG) is the Army’s new rapid deployable unit. The AWG is a Special Missions Unit organized to conduct continuous and simultaneous operations throughout the world to defeat specified asymmetric threats against our nation.

And as I understand it, I believe you have to be an E-7 minimum. So these are definetly experienced people.

Lets see, there was a brief story about them when they started up. Then there was some brief chatter when it was discovered 250 G19s were ordered for them. Now we haven't heard anything since.;)

I am kind of surprised that GSG-9 does'nt issue the Walther P99 or a H&K pistol.

The Walther, HK, Smith and Ruger 357 Mags are/have been other options for GSG-9.
The German military issues the HK USP.
GSG-9 is under the German Federal Police. They authorize many pistols for use: HKs, Walthers, SIGs, and Glocks.
P1 Walther P38
P2 SIG 210
P3 Astra 600/43
P4 Walther (upgraded variation of P38)
P5 Walther
P6 SIG Sauer P225
P7 H&K PSP
P8 H&K USP
P9 Walther P99
P10 H&K USP Compact
Then I lost count. Not sure what the P2000 and G17/19 are designated. Also heard they were evaluating a sig pro compact and the new P250...

I've been looking for the old topic about the specs on their G19s but can't seem to find it. Do you still have that info?

They use different kinds of pistols including HKs. But maybe they they prefer the Glock in certain situations because no external safety to slow them down(KISS). Of course they are well trained, have excellent trigger finger control/discipline, and move very quickly. The HK USP is issued to standard army(maybe external safety is prefered for regular troops) and Walthers/Sigs are used by some police agencies.
I think the new P30 pistol has been approved for German police as well. The P2000 is issued in Bavaria and the Walther P99 in Rheinland Pfalz.
