I thought you guys would get a kick out of what happened to me last week. I was on my way to work and I got pulled over for speeding, going 39 in a 25. The cop comes up and asks for my licenses. I give him my licenses and my conceal carry permit. Following the law, I inform him that I have a pistol in my center consol. He asks me to give it to him. I told him that I would do it very slowly, leaving it holstered. He then told me to sit tight and he would be back. He came back with a ticket and my Bulgarian Makarav unloaded. I asked him why he needed to take it back to his car and he said that he needed to run the numbers and see if it was stolen. I asked why he needed to unload it. I was stunned by his answer. He said that he needed to unload it because “guns are dangerous and you don’t know when they are going to go off for no reason. Especially guns like this one” He then said I could load it after he leaves. Since I already had the ticket in hand, I told him that guns do not go off by them selves. He laughed and went back to his car.

The first time I was stopped for speeding I told the LEO that I had a couple pistols in the car. He asked me what kind? When I said a Makarov and 22, he said, "That's a 9mm isn't it?". I explained what the Mak is. He handed my licenses back and said, "Watch your speed".

Trying to imagine myself in that position, if I were the cop, I may have been reluctant to hand a stranger a loaded pistol.

that happened to me a few times... the LEO simply stated "this is for my safety and peace of mind"..
which is understandable and not a big deal...
once a LEO just took out the magazine and just reversed the top round ....(the bullet was facing the wrong way)...

In TX the LEO has the option of holding your gun during the stop but in all the times I've been stopped, by about every kind of LEO, only one so much as asked me what I was carrying.
I haven't heard of anyone having their gun taken but it's probably happened.
There seemed to be an almost disenterest by the LEO that have stopped me.
Most of the time I noticed a change in their attitude when I've handed them my CHL. Like they know, after all the checks you have gone through, that you are one of the good guys.
A friend said the same thing when he was stopped for speeding. The State Trooper started giving him attitude but changed as soon as he saw the CHL, and didn't give my friend a ticket.
A couple Fort Worth CHL friends have been given tickets by the Fort Worth police but no taking of their guns.

That was my experience the one time I've been stopped since getting my CHL. No ticket. I didn't tell him I had a pistol in the car since I had handed him both my license and CHL.
Since I had a CHL, he knew I could be carrying or have it somewhere in the car so I figured if he wanted to see it, he would ask. He didn't.

The thing about this that I alway wonder is what idiot goes through all the hassle of getting a permit and then carries a stolen gun. In my opinion Its just an excuse to give you the third degree.

I'd just as soon they ask what I've got so we can start talking guns and forget about writing the ticket.
I really don't try to speed and I try to follow the rules but since I got my CHL, when TX first got them, I've been stopped 13 times, mostly for speeding. (just not watching it)
I think my attitude helps but I think having the CHL was the reason that I never received a single ticket (couple warnings). And five of the stops were in infamous speed traps.
Attitude.
Like when I was stopped, the LEO said I clocked you at 74.
I said, I'm afraid that's right. When I saw you I looked at my speedometer and I was doing 75.
Before I left he was apologizing for having to hold me up because the DL check was slow coming back.:)

Of course the pistol in my car was my car gun - Bulgarian Makarov, plus a P-3AT in my pocket.
Attitude is everything. And it helps that the speed limit is 70 on most Texas highways. I usually don't go much more than that.
Been stopped 3 times in the 10 yrs I've been carrying here in Texas. Always gave the LEO my license, insurance and CHL and they never even blinked when when they saw the CHL. Never asked to see the gun, although one asked what it was (an SP 101 at the time and the cop just sorta nodded).
your not required to tell an cop you carrin or have a gun in the glove box do you?:animlol:

In Texas, and some other states (not in Washington where I live), you are required to tell a cop if you're packing.

In N.C you are required to inform police that you are packin'

That is not quite true in Texas.
If you are pulled over you are required to tell them you have a CHL. The usual procedure is the hand the cop both your drivers license and CHL. You might be packing at the time and you might not. Obviously, if the cop asks if you are armed you need to tell them but there is no requirement to announce that you have a gun in your pocket.

You are only required to give them your CHL if the COP asks for ID AND you are actually carrying.

You're right. I looked at the regs on the Texas DPS website. I made the mistake of checking the packing.org website to check my recollection. I had thought you didn't have tell them you had a CHL but the packing.org website said otherwise so I went with that.
I recalled from my concealed carry class that while don't have to volunteer you have a CHL, when they do a license check it says you have a CHL and the cop is liable to be annoyed you didn't tell them so they strongly recommended that you always just give them you driver's license and CHL when pulled over.
I didn't recall you only have to produce your CHL only while carrying.
Following the letter of the law when pulled over for a traffic stop would be very foolish though. If you didn't let them know you had a CHL up front or refused to produce your license when you weren't packing would probably guarantee that you'd get a ticket and any other violations they cop could find.
The one time I've been pulled over since getting a CHL was at night. I turned on the dome light, kept my hands on the steering wheel when the officer approached my car and gave him both my driver's license and CHL. I was soon sent on my way without a ticket.

Ok, looks like I was misinformed. I got my information from our local organization the Washington Arms Collectors (WAC). Their newsletter some time ago said that Texas had granted reciprocity with Washington's CCP but that you had to tell a cop if you were carrying a pistol. Once again, I've repeated unverified information and gotten bit.

At least your weren't scolded too hard this time..........On second thought, go stand in the corner.
When they run the serial # of your gun, it is treated as a "trace". This increases the number of traces of guns. sarah brady then talks about the large number of traces performed and blathers on about how the traces are stopping crime etc. The chiefs of city agencies are ordering their Officers to do these checks. It also skews the numbers for particular gunshops. If the CMPD checks guns on stops, then it will increase the number of "traces" of guns bought by people in Charlotte. The Charlotte gun owners likely bought their guns at a Charlotte gunshop. Now there have been a large number of "traces" of guns bought at the Acme gunshop in Charlotte, and they can then make it look like there is a problem with that shop.
It's not the cop's fault. It's nitwits like Daryl Stevens who are in bed with the pinko politicians and doing their bidding.

I've had different experiences from different officers over the years. All but one were gentlemen about it...
One year, got pulled for speeding by a Highway Patrollman. Once I informed him I was armed, he had me sit the gun on my dash. He then issued the ticket, was very nice about it, told me to "be sure & wear my seat belt", and sent me on my way.
Few years later, got pulled over, and after informing the police officer about what I was carrying & handing him my permit, he put his hand on his gun, backed off, and acted very defensively (like I had threatened to shoot him or something). It was obvious that he definitely DID NOT like working with an armed populace. Finally, he curtly wrote the ticket & then sent me on my way. Not very courteous, but then, he didn't haul me in for whatever. Supposed I should be grateful for that.
Couple of years after that, got pulled over for doing 30mph in a 25mph zone (going down-hill). *Yes, I know they can give tickets for one mile over the limit...but please...
Either way, once I informed him of my CCW, he said "Thankyou for telling me", wrote the ticket, and then left.
I'd say, all-in-all, most officers (least the ones where I am) have common sense & know that law-abiding citizens aren't the ones they need to fear, a few don't.

Last month I got pulled over for speeding and when I presented my d.l. & ccw the officer asked where in the vehicle the weapon was, then he went back to his motorcycle. he wrote me the ticket, but before he left he thanked me for "being armed and doing my part to make our city a safer place" needless to say I was stunned
i dont know what kind of cops u tx guys have but i have never been rude to an officer. if i pass a cop and i know i was speeding, there have been times that i have pulled over, got out, license in hand, waiting 4 him, and still get a ticket!!!! 47 in a 35. your cops must really hate doing paper work, cause sc cops LOVE doing it.

If I were a LEO, I would drop the magazine and clear the chamber. After the stop, I would hand you the unloaded pistol, magazine, and the round that was in the chamber. Better safe than sorry. Regards, Richard

Well...in Utah, you have to tell the officer you are a CCW permit holder and keep your hands on the wheel...till he tells you what to do.
And you got a real winner of an officer. If guns go off by themselves? Wouldnt it be smarter to just leave it where it is....in your car than to risk his life and limbs by actually handling it and god forbid....unloading it. He could have shot himself! :D
Shoot well and god bless
