View Full Version : "Read Instruction Manual"
I was dead-set on buying an SP101 before I found out that they have "Read Instruction Manual" stamped into the barrel, of all places.
Do these jokers think Mercedes or BMW will be stamping "Read Instruction Manual" on the side of their cars any time soon?
Leave it to an American corporation to insult their loyal domestic customers. Why don't I just head down to the Get-O and get some JackArse to spray flourescent green graffiti on it after dropping my $400.

Here's a tip. Find an older one, the billboard is fairly recent. The older the Ruger, the better the shooter and less stuff you'll find on the barrel.

It's all a liability thing
I think the Ruger rollmark appeared in '77 or '78. Where there ever SP101s without the mark? I would doubt it, as they started production in the late 80s... There are many posts describing the rollmark being removed on the various boards. Actually a very doable job on stainless...
The rugerforum has tips and methods to renmove the billboard. This is one thing I 'm planning on doing at some later and date and time ;)

What aspect of the serviceability and performance of the gun was impacted by the roll-marked advisory to read the manual?

NO aspect of serviceability or performance is impacted.
Look at the opening quote on this thread. The performance of a Vette Z06 wouldn't be hindered by some jackass running his key from bumper to bumper or spraying grafitti on the hood in bright pink - it still drives the same. Would you put a Z06 in line to be sprayed or keyed?
Serviceability and performance are the capital factors involved in choosing a gun - and there are thousands of threads dedicated to those issues. Appearance is secondary - but it is important to me, and I favor companies that don't sell out in the name of political correctness.
oh well, more great guns for the rest of us. Stuff like that is easy to remove. You might be better off with something like a smith...if ya dont mind a real cool, full of awesomeness....internal lock. But man o man...they look sweet!:laughabove: :animlol:  :tongueout:
Its all good tho. Im a fan of many firearm companies...including Smith & Wesson. Just dont happen to own one with an internal lock at the pressant moment.
Personally, the "billboard" makes no difference to me. I didn't buy it to look at it. I bought it because it's the highest quality self-defense revolver for the money on the market today. The BG will be looking at the wrong end of the bore and I don't think he'll notice the "billboard" ...And more important to me is it has NO internal trigger lock gizmo that possibly may malfunction at a time when I need it to do it's job.:)

 I am super impressed with the strength and durability of my wife's recently purchased Ruger SP-101. It fits the hand better than any of the other little revolvers; and you can fire it until the frame is too hot to touch, over and over again, without any damage. We got one with a 3" barrel and a large Hogue, soft rubber Monogrip.
This little revolver fits inside a front dungaree pocket and is remarkably easy to shoot straight. Frankly, I could care less about whatever's written on the barrel. The SP-101 is priced right; and, with something like 600 rounds through it so far, it performs very well - indeed.
Try shooting 150 rounds of 357 magnum during one session with any other little revolver, and you'll quickly see what I mean. ;)
