Hi guys, time for a pump shotgun and the wife is agreeable, so I need some help.
I'm a regular gun guy, non-LEO, looking to round out my collection, with a pump shotgun for primary use at the indoor range, and as another home defense option. I've been reading up and looking around the shows. Seems like the Remington 870 gets the most recommendations. The Mossbergs look cool too, but some folks say they are less reliable, accurate, etc., so I'm not sure if I should stay away from those.
I was thinking about an 870 police model, maybe a Marine Magnum, or, even better the upcoming Marine Magnum XCS.
Optimally, I would like a high capacity model and/or the ability to add an extender, as well as higher quality components (ruling out the 870 Express), and maybe something other than a beaded sight. The Mossberg 590 seemed ideal, with the higher capacity, ghost rings, upper safety, etc., but quality is king, and, based upon what I've heard, I'm leaning more towards a tried and true model like the 870.
Any thoughts or suggestions from those of you in the know? Thanks.
I agree with your thoughts...the 870 is the way to go (IMO, at least). I would consider any 870 "good enough", but would prefer a MarMag, 870P, or Wingmaster over an Express.

Let your wallet be your guide.
A Mossy is as good as anything else. Never saw or heard of any problems, military has used them, and some swear by the top-mounted safety.
A sporting 870 like the Express is next. Only the plastic trigger guard is against it.
Love that Remington Marine stainless....
And the 870P is the king of the snob appeal, not to mention that nice steel trigger guard.
(I personally have recently been wringing-out a new Remington 11-87 POLICE semi-auto, and with its 100% reliability with buck and slugs, plus its very easy recoil, it is rapidly replacing my beloved 870P in my affections.)

870's and Mossbergs are fine products.Go to a range and fire both to see what you like (fit, features, etc.) best then buy whatever brand in the Marine/Mariner form and you'll be all set.tom.

Both the 870 and 500/590A1 are used extensively by the military.
My first shotgun was a Mossberg 500 18.5" barrel, my second and third, 870s, and my fourth a Benelli Nova SP.
I'd buy any of them again.
The 590A1 is the "milspec" Mossberg, though the 500 is often used as a doorbreaching gun in infantry units etc from what I've seen.
The Air Force uses the 870 still, we just got some new 870P MAX or the similar military version to that in earlier this year.
The Mossberg safety is a major plus in that you can't miss it, it's literally in front of your nose when the gun is up and ready to fire. The Remsafety is not lefty friendly, and usually people put a bigger one on as the typical one is small.
PS most indoor ranges don't allow shotgun firing.

The search is over. We bought a 870 Police model, with wood stock and forend, parkerized, at the gun show. Since the state's computers were down, I couldn't take it with me, but I will be pickering her up this weekend from the dealer's store -- no biggie since it's going under the tree. Going to add a magazine extender, and maybe a side saddle. I had hoped to get ghost rings, but it was there and a good price, so I think I made the right decision.
Thanks for all the help. Any suggestions for accessories or shells? I was thinking about the reduced recoil 00 8 shot.

Federal LE132. Read This (http://glocktalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=558672)
The equivalent Hornady load is also good. Winchester and Remington offerings thereafter.

870P is an excellent choice. 00 Buck with reduced recoil is a good HD load. Also Federal 1oz slug is good choice as well for HD, and this one got ultimate stopping power.
