View Full Version : Are ghost sights a must with slugs?
I will eventually purchase Ghost sights for my 870, but will it be possible to place slugs on targets at about 25m with only the bead?
Yes. When I had an 870 it was fairly easy to do at 25 yards. At 50 it started to get a little hard. For me it was the L/R I had trouble with because it is hard to gauge where your bead sight is in relation to the receiver.
I recently bought a 590A1 with ghost ring sights and even though it is easier to shoot slugs it does seem slower than a bead for shot. My next shotgun will have a bead.

It's all about what you're used to.
For a bead guy, beads are faster, however, not as accurate further out.
Rifle sights (leaf) for those used to them are pretty quick, but not as quick as ghost rings.
For those trained on aperature sights, like military people, they tend to be the fastest and most accurate, short of a bead at very close range, than a electornic dot sight.
I had a ghost ring (LPA) on my Benelli and I could make fast, accurate hits from 1-100m without any real problems.
I put one of these (in black, not camo) on my 870 for slugs. Works great, and I also find it useful for 00 with the eye relief.
I know its not the norm for a 'tactical' scattergun, but I find that it works really well for me.

ETA: Mine came with a low power scope.
Ian,
ghost ring sights are not a must in order to be able to hit an 8" steel target out to 50 yards. The choice of the right slug for the gun is very important, too. For my Rem 870 21" a Remington 2 3/4"slug works best.
Whatever works for you?
I preferred the Peep/Ghost ring sights and will modify my SKS and Ruger 10-22 for them soon.
I used to have several shotguns with one being a slug gun.
I also drilled and tapped the my shotguns' receivers for scope bases, but a cantilever scope/barrel combo is best for economy and quick barrel changes, only one gun and multiple barrels.

Ghost ring is excellent in fast target acquisition and accuracy, but if you want ultimate speed in target acquisition, try one of those electronic red dot scopes, ie, AIMPOINT, EOTECH, etc.
